We stayed here a couple of nights. It is a typical hostel with lots of young people. The location is good and reception was very kind and helpful. We had a 4 person dorm with view of the mountains. Again we forgot to look the doors and left all our valuebles up for grabs. Luckily everything stayed were it was.... more

The kitchen in this hostel is the dirtiest we encountered during a two month trip around NZ. The overflowing trash/recycling bin was right next to the cutlery 'drawer' The drawer had broken and all the cutlery was laid out on a lower cupboard shelf where bits of garbage from the filthy bins could easily soil it. Because of all the... more

It is a very easy place to find as right on the main road into Kaikoura. We had pre-booked a double en-suite room before we arrived so it didn't take very long to check in. Our room was round the back and we were surprised at how small the room was, It just had a bed in it and a... more

This place has everything going for it. Good layout, facilities, seems pretty new, nice helpful staff but there are bedbugs, so beware. They obviously knew they had a problem because after I woke up with bites and found a few crawling in the skirting boards, I noticed the powder that had been put down. and obviously hadn't worked. Hopefully they... more

Despite all the warnings on various sites about the bedbugs in this place, we stupidly splashed out on a deluxe ensuite room. The room felt dirty and the linen was smelly and certainly not freshly washed. After 2 nights staying there I was covered in very large, red, itchy bedbug bites. Please believe the stories about this place - only... more

For 69NZ$ we had a double en suite room in Dusky Lodge. Pretty good value. Now add in free parking, a large pool, a hot tub, a sauna, a sun deck with a view of the mountains and three kitchen/dining rooms and it becomes great value. It is also well located, maybe a 10 minute walk to town. The only... more

Stayed here for a couple of nights. The room (especially linen and shower) were dirty. Found numerous hairs in the bed, the duvet cover had not been cleaned and we have both got bed bugs from the place and are still itching 2 weeks later. Not the first instance of bed bugs at this place, from what I have heard... more

Wish I'd checked out tripadvisor before booking a room at Dusky Lodge, having experienced similar problems to the guy who stayed there in January. On paper the hostel is great with a spa and swimming pool. The problem is they cut corners by not washing their duvet covers when a new person sleeps in a bed. They give you a... more
