Beautifully presented and in a lovely location. All food supplied was super fresh. They even provide home made cake & biscuits and a bowl of fresh fruit. Owners are super friendly and so are their dogs and one eyed cat. I was quite disappointed though when I found out this was actually a B&B. The walls are very thin and you can hear everything in the next room (which is their kitchen/lounge). You have a private bed, bathroom & kitchette but the patio and lounge is shared with the owners and/or other guests. The rooms do face west which makes them very hot in the afternoon and there is no air-conditioning (only a standard fan). It would be nice to leave the windows open but you can't because there are no fly screens and heaps of mosquitoes come in at night. The rooms are big though and have a glorious outlook. Beautiful place and worth a visit but be prepared with shared lounging areas and close the windows at dusk.…

Response from AsteliaLodge, Owner at Astelia Lodge
Responded 21 Mar 2020
Thanks for your positive comments about the food, view etc. We were a bit puzzled by your expectation that we were offering self-contained units away from the main property. I can find nothing on our own website, , or indeed Booking.com or Expedia, to suggest we are anything but a B&B. Our photos reflect the arrangement of our two guest rooms and their location. We generally only book out both rooms at the same time to adult family groups or friends, so in line with that policy you were the only guests staying, effectively (apart from our presence as hosts) having the place to yourselves. I’m sorry you thought the kitchen buzz intrusive. Previous guests have found the sounds and aromas of food preparation a source of comfort and a welcome part of the overall B&B experience. We have considered fly screens however we think covering the windows with mesh would spoil both the character of the rooms and the view. It was unfortunate that there were some mosquitos during your stay, this is the first year we had any at all (lasting a mere week or so) and we can only attribute this to a changing climate.

A return visit to stay with Mandy and Andrew because we enjoyed it so much first time round. What a welcoming hospitable pair. Andrew cooked a lovely 3 course meal on our arrival and breakfasts were just what we like - fresh fruit, muesli etc, and good coffee. We had some lively conversation with many points of interest and good advice about what was good to see in the area, which we followed up over our stay. The setting of Astelia Lodge is delightful, lovely views, space and spaciousness for guests and hosts, large comfy beds, a well designed and useful kitchen area, excellent WiFi, and plentiful sitting areas and no smell of sulphur. What’s not to like. Many thanks to you both for your welcome.

My husband and I have just spent two nights here and it really has been the highlight of all the places we have stayed during our tour of New Zealand. Stunning but warm and welcoming accommodation in an incredibly beautiful and peaceful setting.....we really did not want to leave. There were so many little welcoming and thoughtful gestures and we loved the warm welcome from the four-legged family as well as Mandy and Andrew. Enjoying the complimentary, delicious wine, under the stars was idyllic. Thank you both for your welcome and wonderful "northern" friendliness. We have made some special memories!

Beautiful location tucked up against an amazing backdrop. Couldn't ask for a more comfortable and clean alternative to the plethora of motel madness in Rotorua. Only a 20 minute drive outside the city is this B&B lovers paradise. Very quiet and peaceful grounds surrounded by farm lands and open country. Can't speak highly enough of Mandy's cooking skills and presentation, absolutely astounding. Wish we could have stayed longer but very appreciative that we found this awesome little hidden gem! Thanks Andrew and Mandy!

My husband and I were beyond happy with our stay at Andrew and Mandy’s lodge! The view from our very comfortable and clean room was incredible and their warm hospitality made our stay wonderful. The pets on the property are an added treat with them letting us feed the donkey and alpacas. The pups and cats were so sweet and adorable too. Close to town and as hosts they were incredibly helpful and friendly, I’d highly recommend a stay here and when we return to New Zealand we’d definitely be looking to stay with them again!!

We stayed three wonder nights with Mandy and Andy. Our room was beautiful, the views stunning and hospitality was nothing short of excellent. We had an extra bonus of two beautiful dogs whom greeted us like they was welcoming a family friend. Our room was filled with personal touches and every day we came home to a hand made gift of home cooked goodies. The spa treatments in the bathroom were just wonderful and cruelty free. Mandy and Andy offer a delicious breakfast and can cater for all needs. For me I loved the fact that animal welfare mattered. This place is perfect to see some of the most spectacular sights, geothermal baths, mud pools and volcanic eruptions of steam and hot water (all safe to see) I would strongly recommend this place if you want to escape noise and light pollution and just unwind listening to the sounds of the native wildlife. We will be back, thank you Mandy, Andy, Daisy and Sid for a special start to our holiday. …

My partner and I stayed here for a few nights during our holiday in NZ. We honestly could not fault it at all. The property and our room was beautiful, the hosts were so lovely and welcoming, every day when we went out they would tidy our room and bake little treats for us and leave them in our room to eat, it was my birthday when we arrived and they wrote me a card and gave me a present which was so thoughtful. Both my partner and I are vegan and they were more than happy to cater to us, we had vegan breakfast everyday and dinner one of the nights and honestly, it wasn't your typical easy vegan food, it was next level amazing chef quality food, top 10 of the places we have eaten. Astelia Lodge is 11/10, its 100% worth the money you pay for it, and if we come back to NZ we would definitely stay here again.…

We spent in Astelia Lodge just few days, but we enjoyed very much this stay. Andrew & Mandy did everything to make our stay as nice as possible ! They gave us a lot of useful information and hints. The room and bathroom are very comfortable and there is a big sunny terrace with wonderful view (you have this view even from your bed !). We will definetly come back to Astelia Lodge if again in North Island :)

if you want to escape the smell of sulfur which is omnipresent in Rotorua, Astelia Lodge is the best place to stay. Absolutely quiet area, beautiful furnished room, good bed and breakfast prepared with so much love. Mandy and Mark are amazing hosts, we stood with them in February 2016, they help you to organize and give good tips to explore Rotorua.
