It's apt that Marlene Dietrich once stayed at the Monopol. Granted, at no time did the great actress ever allow herself to look quite this faded; but this is a grand old edifice that has lived to a ripe old age and relied--with evidently decreasing success--on massive globs of makeup to keep up appearances. I stayed at the hotel Monopol for two days. It is located centrally, only a few minutes walk from the old city centre, and also not so far from the railway station were I arrived. The Orbis Monopol is a turn of the century treasure that has not yet been fully modernized. It was somewhat difficult to get to the hotel from the central train station because the main street adjacent to the hotel is being renovated, and all the trolleys have been diverted several blocks away. The Monopol is a classic old-style hotel with very large rooms and bathrooms. The hotel is clearly old, but everything is well kept and the service was great. The breakfast if top-rate and the dining rooms are grand. The location is fantastic - really close to the bus to the airport and a 10 minute walk to the town square.... more

Amazing atmosphere in this hotel - dark marble floors in the foyer, bronze chandeliers, and overall a feeling of vast, faded splendour.
