This hotel and restaurant is tucked down on the river dividing Slovenia from Croatia. It's a beautiful, unspoilt valley well worth exploring: bears are seen by hikers in the woods around and there's trout fishing and rafting on the river.
Osilnica is the only village of any size in this valley. Contrary to what many maps suggest, there is a road to it along the north (Slovenian) side of the border.
The Kovac is a spotless, simple hotel with lovely rustic restaurant and large terrace. The menu is very limited but the food all locally produced and very fresh. The friendly owners, who speak excellent English, also arrange rafting and a host of other activities such as archery and tennis (they effectively act as the tourist office here too!)
A wonderful spot, well off the beaten track but worth finding for a couple of days.
