This was our first visit to NZ and after all of the stunning scenery we've seen in the movies, our hopes were high. It was a quick 'taster' visit which encompassed Christchurch, Arthur's Pass National Park and the Banks Peninsula. Well, the scenery certainly didn't let us down, but suprisingly the people we came across in the first few days... more

We've walked past Garthowen B&B many times and have always thought it would be a great place to stay in Akaroa - unfortunately was a bit too much to pay. In mid-winter however the rates are far more reasonable, and Akaroa itself is much quieter. A nice touch was having our names on the board outside to welcome us. The... more

Garthowen is a wonderful B&B in a superb location. I received mixed advice of whether to say in Akaroa or go on a day trip from Christchurch. I am SOOO glad I decided to stay the night at this beautiful B&B. Sharon was a delight (Ian was away) and she provided me with an excellent restaurant recommendation and a splendid... more

On arriving in Christchurch, the cabbie highly recommended a visit to Akaroa. We had never heard Akaroa, but as we moved throughout the south island the name continued to arise! On a whim, we visited Akaroa as a last stop, and nearly out of money, I inspected a room and just had to stay! The hosts, rooms, breakfast and the... more

We stayed at Garthowen and could literally walk out our door to the beach. The marina is just across the street and the sun sets across the hills behind making it quite a sight. My wife and I enjoyed a glass of wine with Sharon and Ian, the hosts, as the sun set. We really enjoyed our stay here! more

What a lovely spot Akaroa is. We stayed with Sharon and Ian for 2 nights in their beautiful home and were lucky enough to get a room with a sea view. They were the perfect hosts and could not do enough to help us. The breakfasts were quite a challenge but we somehow managed! We would not hesitate in recommending... more

You really have to stay at this place. The friednly reception, the fantasticically comfortable and well appointed rooms, the beachside location, the magnificant breakfasts, and the attention to detail have to be experienced to be believed. The bathroon drawer even had headache pills in it, for goodness sake! This is a most wonderfully restored building, meticulously researched from local archives.... more

This is quite simply the most perfect place on earth!! We spent 3 weeks touring New Zealand on a motor bike and didn't find anywhere with such charming and accomodating hosts, such scrumptious breakfasts, comfortable beds and beautifully equipped rooms and perfect location, right on the sea front.. and there was alot of competition! Sharon and Ian go out of... more

Wonderful spot, great views, magnificent hosts. A truly wonderful place to relax after the many walks available on the Banks Penisula. A great place to stay if you have something special to celebrate or just want to get away for a break. Our favourite place in the south, been there on 5 occasions and will definately be going back!
