What you need to know: Negative - The resort is either sold or is just about to be; God knows what it will be like under new owners - It is not possible to go anywhere past sunset. They are reluctant to operate the boats and it is prohibitively expensive to have someone bring you back if you want a... more

Salamander was a little more remote than we envisioned, but what an awesome place! The food is some of the best i've ever eaten, staff friendly and helpful and the weather was fantastic! We didn't relaise how far it was from shops etc (about 25min boat ride) so take supplies like sunscreen and any other goodies you need. Other than... more

We were the last guest to stay at the Salamander Hideway before it closed on May 31st. We had booked our trip over six months ago before the hotel was sold so when we heard that it was closing at the end of May we were really concerned. As well, we saw a few of the last reviews which were... more

We are writing this review having returned to work following a wonderful honeymoon, both wishing we had never left Salamander. Our experience there was perfect, wonderful food, great location, obliging staff and great company. Firstly we would like to thank the manager Hans. His relaxed 'nothing is a problem' attitude was first evident when American Airlines left us out of... more

I suppose it all boils down to 1) expectations, and 2) a person's character. In other words, if you expect Salamander to be a resort with every accommodation usually provided in 4 start hotels, and if you have a finicky character...Salamander is not for you. On the other hand, if you expect seclusion, simplicity, and a natural setting, and if... more

I had the great fortune of staying at the Salamander Hideaway this May with my boyfriend. We spent four days and nights at this very special resort where we ate wonderful food, snorkeled, biked, walked, photographed, took a lagoon tour, lounged, and ate some more. It is in a very isolated region of San Pedro - which is part of... more

I met a girl in a hot tub at the Chateau Fairmont in Whistler who told me that she had just returned from an incredible place in Belize. I don't have a great memory, but the name Salamander Hideaway stuck with me and I looked it up on the net after my return from Canada. Within 2 months I had... more

I feel bad rating it a 'terrible' but I would hate anyone else to be disappointed with this resort. The website gives such a wonderful impression but fails to point out a number of important facts. It's so far north you can't get anywhere else on the island. Although this may be tropical paradise for some, for us we felt... more

Management response from
Salama, manager

This should be my last management response - we're going to close down on May 31 and Salamander will change completely and even open under a new name. Yeah, in April I had to be in Europe for some time - something very normal in all kinds of business. There was a manager on the site who already managed before...

We've just left Belize and are very unhappy to leave our both vacation places: We had booked a 'surf & turf' package for Salamander and Casa Maya in Belize and it was such a beautiful experience for our honeymoon. Great organisation - you do not have to care for anything, beautiful places, very nice food, especially at Salam, ander with authentic... more

We needed a place of solitude, relaxation and beauty all of which we found at Salamander Hideaway. The Manager and staff were wonderful - helpful, knowledgable, courteous, respectful, friendly and fun. We were made to feel relaxed and comfortable - not like we were at a resort but at a place of our own. Food was delicious with good variety.... more
