We asked a local on one of the cays for a recommendation for our last night in Belize City. This person must have been a co-owner. It was very dirty with bugs crawling all over the room. Since it was late in the day and we wanted to go to the casino, we stayed. We left for the casino - but no one told us that you had to be back in the room at a certain time. When we came back that night, there was a locked metal gate across the door. It was very dark outside and not in a good part of town. We banged sticks on the gate for half an hour before someone came to the door...then they didn;t want to let us in!!! We finally got in but the entire hotel was dark with only a few night lights to guide us up the stairs. There seemed to be shady characters hiding in the shadows. We slept in our clothes for a few hours and got the heck out of there! We have been going to Belize for years and this is the only bad experience we have ever had. more
