We had a very comfortable one-night stay at the Rancho Grande, located on the street behind the ever-so-busy main street. Our spacious room (and equally spacious bathroom) were in the older part of the hotel, not in a bungalow. We had no fireplace, but did have a comfortable seating area in a glassed-in verandah just outside our room. The grounds... more
If you are a pancake fanatic, this charming bungalow hotel has somehow maintained the employee of a fabulous breakfast cook for over 13 years, named Petrona Zapeta, who makes thee most unusual yet best tasting pancake we've ever had. The charming manager says that it is a combination of Guatemalan and German ideas, but we've traveled all over Germany, and... more
Finding this hotel was a problem when we arrived after driving in from Chichicastenango. However, once found, everything was great. We had planned on staying a couple of nights, but ended up spending almost a week there. There is a little restaurant where we ate one time (it wasn't that wonderful), a pool (too cold for us) and pleasant grounds.... more
My wife & I stayed here on a Friday night with a reservation made only 6 hours in advance (by the owner of Posada de Santiago, across the lake.) Upon arrival, my wife was so ill with vomiting & diarrhea she was unable to go to a clinic in Panachel. A gentleman at the front desk, Pedro, was very helpful... more
Some of the reviews here suggest that folks came to Panajchel with unrealistic expectations. You won´t find luxury in Pana -- even in the appropriately highly rated Hotel Atitlan. And you certainly won´t find it at the vastly overrated Del Lago. At the Rancho Grande Inn, however, you will find -- as we have for the past 15 years --... more
Part of a large group that took ~6 rooms. Gave me a chance to look in multiple rooms. Luck of the draw, I drew the dark dingy room described in a previous posting. Other rooms were spacious and brighter. The shower was barely functional at times. I was barely able to get wet in the shower, until I spun off... more
This was given rave reviews by several guidebooks, especially because of the separate bungalows. It seems, however, it may depend which bungalow you get. While my bungalow was indeed spacious, there were bugs in the bathroom and it was inches away from the street so very noisy. Despite reserving through email, they also lost my reservation but still found me... more
I was very disappointed with Rancho Grande Inn. My room was small, dark and dingy with a bathroom that had mold growing on the shower curtain and in the cracks in the wall and floor. I made this reservation several months before my travel,so it is not as though I arrived on site hoping for a vacancy. I requested information... more
My husband and I made a reservation, in this hotel, to have a romantic time in Panajachel. We talked to the manager (Christine Kennedy) and we arranged our stay. Eventhough we gave our credit card number, and we had made the reservation, when we arrived they told us we didn't have any reservation at all. That was why I asked... more
