I stayed in Kilwa en route to the South for work in the field (left Dar a bit too late in the day to make it farther) so wasn't really looking for a fancy resort or specific amenities- just a place to crash for the night. Kilwa has a lack of 'mid-range' hotels, only very expensive lodges and boutique hotels and very low end places my backpacker brother didn't even want to stay in. I hadn't brought a lot of cash with me for the high-end lodges, so I was a bit worried when I found out we needed to stay the night there.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Kilwa Sea View Hotel offers camping at only $5 per person! the campsite is at the end of the line of hotel rooms, near the edge of the cliff, with nice grass or a big covered bandha with packed dirt floor on which to pitch your tent. There is an all-night guard posted in the campsite for security, and a fence rings the property.
