The Magic Lodge bivouac encampment "near Douz" is actually on the edge of a small village called Sabria (Essabria). Booked on line with Promovacances, subsidiary of Karavel/Opodo, Royal Tours was the final operator. They were efficient, competent and friendly.
We travelled in March 2007 at a bargain basement price, so that must be taken into context. There were only 11 of us, 2 drivers and a guide, hence we were able to make the journey in 2 4X4s. It was a more intimate way of travel than a tour bus. In fact, we were able to visit places that tour buses couldn't and remarked the sites where tour buses were parked and where they sought restauration.
The "lodge" is a former colonial military outpost, Fort Sabria, in half ruin but we found it to be very rustic and charming. It is not, however, for the discerning, demanding or faint of heart. It is very rudimentary.
