Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

I stayed at Kumbali at the end of my trip and found it a delightful place to unwind after long road trips, and varied accommodation. It's a green oasis, with beautiful grounds. Rooms are large and well equipped with spacious terraces overlooking the gardens. There are many lovely birds to be seen, and the management plan to bring in a range of animals such as antelope later this year. Food at Kumbali is excellent, and staff are pleasant and helpful.

This is a very comfortable lodge where we were made very welcome for our first night in Malawi. It took about an hour to drive from the airport. The lodge is set in very attractive gardens with a small swimming pool. The WiFi worked well and the shower was good and hot. The lodge also has a restaurant which serves excellent food.

I stayed two nights at the Kumbali country lodge while waiting for family to arrive in Malawi. The location is excellent with a very peaceful and relaxing environment. Lots of small wildlife available for viewing. Excellent bar and restaurant. I enjoyed sitting at the bar and talking with Hamson. All of the staff were great.

I can’t say enough about this superb hotel. Located out of town in a completely tranquil location, providing a perfect night’s sleep. Food in the restaurant was consistently delicious over our four night stay, with local produce from the farm presented inventively., and a fully stocked bar! But the real asset is the staff - all of whom could not do enough for us. Thank you so much.

If you are reading this review, from my extensive experience, this is by far the best place to stay in Lilongwe. If you are coming to Lilongwe, you need to stay here. The best kitchen in all of Lilongwe and probably in all of Malawi is 5 minutes walk from Kumbali -- "The Farmers Daughter" The food was exceptional - everything about the place is beautiful, very modern and comfortable. If you stay at Kumbali, make sure you go to this cafe style of restaurant right next door to the Lodge. "The Farmers Daughter." It is AWESOME. Kumbali lodge is very special and comfortable -- all the employees who work here are great. Especially the team working in the cafe/restaurant - christopher, Hamson, Mike, Dorothy, Hasan, Elizabeth... and the manager Geraldine is awesome. I hope i have not left any one out. Brilliant team who have their hearts completely in their jobs. The kitchen team - excellent. Do not waste time reading any of the negative comments that have been left (my experience was near perfection, you are coming to Africa - you can't expect it to be like Paris, and it seems many of the negative comments are issues related to just being in Africa, not the resort or the staff) I stayed here for 24 days -- and the team went out of their way to ensure my stay was perfect. I highly highly recommend the Kumbali Lodge. Ideally, I will see them again in 2 weeks.

Let's start with the positive: staff was friendly and rooms were spacious and clean. However the lodge is in need of some TLC. The pool was dirty, my mom stayed inside for the duration of our stay because the 3 quite big dogs of the owner were wandering around and she is terrified (they are actually quite friendly, although one was nipping at our ankles) and the food was so-so.

Nice room with balcony. Food was also wonderful in the restaurant with lovely massage service. However, we informed them that we are checking out at 5am the next day and have requested for some coffee and simple packed breakfast. The hotel agreed to the request, saying there is no issue to that but the next morning, the main reception door was locked with no one around in sight. We attempted to knock multiple times but no one came. We waited till 530am and had to leave for the airport- with no coffee or breakfast at all. Pretty disappointing.

The lodge has a top class restaurant perhaps one of the best in the city. The place however is rather far from most areas in the city and to reach it there the part of the road which is dusty. It is rather expensive and the menu is in US dollars. Service is excellent and seating arrangements are superb.

Arriving at the Kimball Country Lodge is an experience in itself. An Oasis of colour and lush vegetation greets visitors at the end of the village trail closely followed by the cheerful, helpful and professional staff. The lodge itself is built in a traditional style with a high vaulted ceiling and a mezzanine restaurant and lounge area overlooking the well planned and cared for gardens leading to the swimming pool. There are a number of local walks and an abundance of birdlife to entertain.

As expected of rustic, bucolic, colonial style getaways, Kumbali has the romanticized thatched roofs, expansive well maintained grounds and serenity of nature. What is a plus, is the warm and welcoming vibe one gets as you enter the foyer. The drive to Kumbali is an adventure in itself. After you leave the paved road and hit dirt, you get the sensation of shedding the weary weight of the toxic world. As you inch past a small "village" and navigate towards Kumbali you feel the vibe of being on a mini safari - and eventually as you enter the boom gate you are whisked away into a different world. The place is charming, romantic and restful. The staff are attentive and kind. Covid precautions and public health measures are also adhered to. The rooms are expansive and amazing. The furniture is well appointed, the beds are comfortable and the toilet is very clean and organized. You have the comfort of a fridge in the room; DSTV (but who needs it when you are here); a balcony overlooking the garden/lawn. The restaurant/bar and sitting areas are expansive and well organized, there is even a second floor sitting area that can even double as a mini function room for small groups having a training or meeting. The pool area is great and the gardens and grounds are enticing for a walk. The food selections and menu have a gamut of options for all types of palates - vegetarians, meat lovers - and everyone else in between. The furniture, layout and construction of Kumbali is meant to stand for ages. And I do hope that Kumbali stays that way for years to come.
