I did not not stay only once in this hotel but probably 4 or 5 times and I could show proofs of my stays easily with Agoda for those who have doubts. Until my last stay I would have probably given a 5 stars rating to 5th Lane House as it's really in my opinion one of the best place to stay in Colombo for a fair price : Big rooms, well furnished with taste and antiquities (like the ceiling fans), good beds, very convenient location, etc. The problem comes from the owner or manager that I had to deal with the last time I came. I'm 42 y.o., I've been travelling around the world in all kinds of hotels from the most basic (but clean) places in India to the most elegant and expensive hotels, I'm also a business and strategy consultant in the tourism industry but never ever in my life I have been treated with such rude manners, lack of education and humanity. This being said, let's go back to the day I've decided I'll never stay there again : I was travelling from Arugam Bay to Colombo by van (8 hours ride) with my 78 y.o. mother and my 2 y.o. son, we started from Arugam Bay at midnight and travelled all night long. I made my booking on the way using Agoda. We were just out of the car, quite exhausted and sleepy when I rang the door. One man who I think was the owner as he was not the person I always dealt with started asking quite abruptly without a proper hello or welcome if I had a reservation. I said I had and started inquiring about my mother as I booked only for one. I told him that my mother was flying the same day back to France and that I just took the journey to be with her. Then he said she was not mentioned and that I would have to pay 35$ for her. I replied she was not sleeping there, that we planned to go shopping in Colombo and that she'll head to the airport. He asked me if she was going to have a shower and I honestly replied yes, most probably to refresh herself before leaving to the airport. Then he said I had to pay or leave. As my room was prepaid and I was not intending to pay 35$ extra for my mother to have a shower, I decided that we'll leave the place, I'd rather pay for an other room than stay in a place run by such a psycho. Of course I'm not giving all the details, the rude way this man talked to me and to an elder lady. You'll understand it was no longer a question of money but a matter of principle. The guy usually taking care of the guests was not here that day, I don't know he was sick, fired, missing or what, all I know is that I had to deal with a sociopath who should not be working in the hospitality business as he clearly doesn't get the point. Hospitality is a real profession which has code, rules and demands a good interrelation skills, some education, empathy and more. None of those were demonstrated on that day. Too bad as like I said, this used to be my favorite place to stay in Colombo and a place I was recommending to a lot of people. I no longer do unless no other convenient option is available and one is ready to deal with Mr Hide.

This was my second stay was hear in 2013 during X mass. The place always kept clean and in order, manager and the staff were attentive to detail. Lots of advice and info if you need any, it is like coming to old friends. It was embarrassing for me to say this, towel ripped in the middle while I was drying myself. Found a mended patch in my under sheet. Wanted to mention this to Amendra but didn’t want to hurt since they were so nice at what they do. Nevertheless I will be back next time when in Colombo. This is one clean and homely place I found in Colombo.

Stayed here for 1 night (26th December) After a little confusion before the check in since was the early next day after Christmas it was all smooth sailing which led to a comfortable stay overall. Rooms:(Deluxe) Nice big room, clean and comfortable. Staff : Both the Manager and the other staff were very hospitable, helped us in any way possible. Location: Fantastic, the hotel is just off the main road so its quiet yet still close enough to the restaurants and stores in the city.

we stayed here on our first night in Sri Lanka, and it was great. The room was very spacious, with a good sized bathroom. The staff were very nice and found us a car for the drive to Kandy (costing 8,000 rupees). The breakfast is included with the price and includes eggs how you wish, fruits, toast and drinks. It is about 1hr from the airport, and a 30 minute walk to the main part of town (by the world trade centre).

I stayed at the Fifth Lane House three times in a 12-month period, each time for several weeks as I was in Colombo on business. I found this to be a really excellent place to stay and very suitable for short or long stay and for business or holiday travellers. The guest house is very well situated, with many places of interest easily accessible; and it is set back from the main “Duplication Road”, so there is no traffic disturbance at night. The hotel itself is very tastefully laid out, and nicely decorated and fitted; and the rooms are all very comfortable, well equipped with fridges, TV and WiFi, and always kept clean and tidy. The staff are all very efficient and friendly; and the management is very polite, effective and hospitable. Breakfast is provided daily and the staff were also happy to provide me with an excellent home-cooked Sri Lankan dinner in the evening, which was always a highlight of my stay! I was treated very well throughout all of my visits and I would recommend the 5th Lane House to anyone wanting a comfortable stay in Colombo, with friendly and very welcoming staff and management.

Have stayed in this place twice, and both the times the experience was very good. It only offers bed and breakfast but the breakfast was very good and customized. i should mention the staff is one great highlight, since they are decent, professional and helpful. first we were at the upper most floor next to the library an i enjoyed the books an the peacefulness in the library. property is altogether is small, however inside the rooms you do not feel its small. they have a Jacuzzi.

Nestled in a quiet lane between Galle Road and Duplication Road, 5th Lane is very comfortable and at the higher end of what one might expect of a guesthouse. The rooms and bathrooms were cool, comfortable and well equipped (tea making, nice bathrooms, safe, nice beds). The western breakfast was ample. We got a 40% off deal on Agoda (AU$110/night) but not sure I would pay the full rate.

My sister and me stayed at 5th lane house for the 2 first nights of our sri lanka holiday. it is a wonderful little hotel with spacious and well equipped rooms, personalised service and tastefull decoratin. although it is centrally located in Colpetty the hotel itself is very peaceful and quite. Amendra and Krishna were very attentive and supportive. we enjoyed our stay there so much that we decided to spend our last night of our Sri Lanka travel at the sister hotel "Raja House" which was an equally pleasing experience. we certainly can recommend 5th lane house and Raja house for any traveller (business or holiday) looking for a decent, cozy and peaceful place. Thank you Amendra and Team. K and M.

This is a nice hotel in a convenient location in Colombo. It is an easy tuk-tuk drive away from the station and the Old Dutch Hospital, and walking distance from Cloud Café, The Gallery and The Cricket Club Café. The rooms are large and have good air conditioning, whilst the breakfast is a lovely mixture of fruit, eggs and toast (a sensible amount in Sri Lankan terms). Getting a taxi from the airport, our taxi driver found it very difficult to locate this hotel, so it may be worth printing a google map in advance. The hotel is up a lane which is dark at night, and whilst we did not feel threatened in anyway, it may be worth considering for female travellers.

The room was large, beautifully designed, comfortable and very quiet. The staff were fantastic: very competent and always smiling. Breakfast was good. All in all, great value for a well located, jewel box of a hotel in Colombo.
