We visited Istanbul in may 2013 , and we chose to stay in an excellent place near the old city. We didn't need any kind of transportation. Breakfast was excellent and we liked that they had every morning a honeycomb. The room was small but cozy and the beds were very comfortable. The stuff was friendly and helpful.

A lovely hotel, in the perfect location of the Old City. Within walking distance of the main attractions. 1/2 hour to Ataturk Airport by taxi. Restaurant attached to hotel (Red River) was well priced and great with kids. All staff very friendly and welcoming.
