The Orient Gate is a basic but clean hotel occupying the 3rd floor of a scruffy building right in the centre of town. The location reminded me of Kowloon, lots of DVD/Mobile phone shops , alleyways and bustle, but as everywhere in Damascus, feels safe. It is nicely placed for an easy walk to the Old Town and also surrounded by banks, western style coffee shops and internet places . The young guys running the desk speak good english and couldn't have been more helpful.. I arrived and left during the small hours and the reception was always manned and there to assist. They can advise on trips and transport too. Breakfast was a boiled egg, olives, bread and jam, on the roof terrace, and fresh towels are put on the end of your bed every day. more
