I have stayed at a number of places in Nuku'Alofa whilst working in Tonga and Emerald is the place I go back to you. Great location, rooms, staff and restaurant. Very close to the centre of Nuku'Alofa. Free wifi, good bathrooms and big rooms are some of the features you will enjoy, I don't have anything bad to say!

Stayed for a night on a work trip to Tonga.. Nice big airy rooms... the TV was small with Digicel transmission.. it was fine.. The major grips were cleanliness. Used, slimy and dripping soap in not a great start in the bathroom.. unfortunately did not get much better.. would probably stay there again- as such a good location...

Our family really enjoyed our 3 day stay at the Emerald. It was centrally located. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. We had a seaview room and the views were beautiful. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. We had dinner at the restaurant which was also delicious.

Having stayed at or looked at most of the hotels in Nuku’alofa, I can say this place has some of the best rooms in the capital. They’re spacious, comfortable and well-appointed with flatscreen TVs, free wi-fi, and big showers with good water pressure (though the tile grouting could do with a scrub). Service is good, and the central location unbeatable.... More

I stayed here for 5 nights on a work trip. Overall impression: Some good points but generally average. I had one of the ocean view rooms and the view was fabulous. Gripes: room wasn't always cleaned properly; sometimes used wine glasses were not replaced or cleaned the following day; plumbing issue with a blocked toilet; breakfast service was too slow.... More

This new hotel is next to the grand old dame the International Dateline Hotel and it was an interesting contrast. Everything was plastic, including the 'chrome' fittings in the bathroom and the 'wooden' doors so I doubt its lasting qualities. Hot water not connected in bathroom basins and 'cold' tap in shower we eventually found out was the hot water.... More

I stayed at the Emerald for a week. Although the hotel was generally fine I don't think it's worth the rates they charge when compared to other accommodation on the island. The hotel appears to have been recently built or renovated and some of the quality of workmanship is fairly average. The beds were huge but firm. The shower was... More

I had the pleasure of staying at the Emerald of almost 2 months in March/April 2012. It is probably the newest accommodation in Nukualofa and is currently in the process of extension which will double its capacity. The hotel is completely Chinese down to its hard beds and even the TV and A/C remotes are all in chinese, so very... More

The main issues in Tonga are Security, Location, Friendly Service and Security. Having experience of almost every guest residence on the main island i can vouch for the Emerald and its staff. Security is paramount. The manager is amazing in his dedication to this project, and having been schooled and trained in England is a pillar of assistance. Lovely air-con... More

Lots of small improvements could make a big difference to this hotel. It has the potential to be a good hotel. The mosquitoes will eat you alive. Pack lots of Aeroguard. They need to do something about this. The airconditioner and TV remotes are labelled in Chinese so there's lots of random button pressing to keep you busy. Print some... More
