We booked Hotel 81 a few nights before arrival, for a bargain price. We stayed for 4 night for just over £300. Upon arrival, were checked in promptly. The receptionist took a copy of our passports on arrival for security reasons, which is understandable. The staff were kind, friendly and helpful, so we had high expectations. The bedroom and bathroom were both very small, but spacious enough to not complain about. The room seemed clean, and air con was an added bonus. The night was incredibly restless. The cleaners were working until gone midnight (not entirely sure as to why, because our room was cleaned in the morning), there were children screaming, TV shows being played unnecessarily loud, and individuals having sex left right and centre. It was very difficult to sleep with all the bustle, the walls are strangely thin. We were then woken early the next morning by traffic and workmen outside the hotel. We didn’t spend much time in the hotel as we were exploring Singapore. Our room was cleaned at some point throughout the day, where the cleaners provided us with a new bottle of water each, clean towels (unnecessarily as we didn’t dirty the previous towels), and a new plastic toothbrush each (again, unnecessary considering Singapore are supposed to be ahead in the current plastic ‘crisis’ which is something I feel very strongly about). Everything seemed fine, until we got into bed and realised that the sheets that had been changed had brown stains on, right where we were sleeping. We complained to the hotel staff who said it would be sorted in the morning. We waited until very late into the night, but no one arrived to change the sheets, even after asking a second time and hearing the cleaners on our floor. We decided to just sleep on top of the sheets in the end (I assume no one came thag night, we didn’t hear a knock on the door). The noice was, again, quite unbearable, so it took us a while to fall to sleep. We had no significant problems for the rest of our stay; just the level of noise in the evenings and throughout the night. The morning of our departure, the hotel staff booked us a taxi to the airport, which was very helpful as our phones were on aeroplane mode. Check out was very simple. The location of the hotel is okay, it is close to many transport options (about 1km from train). We walked into marina bay and close most days which took about an hour. However, on the first night walking around the Geyleng area, I received many ‘looks’ from males, wearing shorts and a vest top. I didn’t mind so much as I’m perfectly able to keep my head up and ignore it, but the rest of my stay I tried to cover up a little more. I still received he same looks. On our way to the airport, our taxi driver explained to us that Geyleng is considered the ‘red light district’ of Singapore, which explains the loud sex and looks I received during our stay. I would not have stayed in the area if I’d have known this, as it is quite disconcerting. Also, on the website we booked this hotel through (maybe booking.com can’t remember) it stated there was a laundrette service provided by the hotel, but when we asked, the member of staff informed us that the nearest laundrette was about 1km away, which was a bit of a surprise. (After reading reviews of the nearby laundrette we decided to walk a bit further to one which had better reviews). Maybe take note of this if you are planning to stay for a while. Overall our stay was rather unpleasant, but was made easier by the lovely hotel staff on reception.…
