We spent one night here while visiting Machu Picchu. We selected the hotel due to its location and were not disappointed. Being right next to the main entrance is an advantage. As we visited in April, it rained off and on. It was very convenient to be able to go back to the hotel to let the showers pass, then... more

As some of the other reviewers have mentioned the Sanctuary Lodge really isn’t worth the money. The rooms are tiny. The food is good but not excellent. The service is good but not great like at the Hotel Monasterio and the check out time of 9 AM is a bit extreme. Basically, you are paying a premium for location but... more

Dear guest, We would like to thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear that your expectations about Machu Picchu were not completely fulfilled. As said before, opening and closing hours of Machu Picchu citadel are controlled by the National Culture Institute. We feature a prime position within the sanctuary and always try to do our best to...

My fiance and I spent one night here to celebrate our engagement and visit MP. We booked the Machu Picchu package that included the Hiram Bingham train for around $1870, which included all meals, drinks, snacks, taxes and tips. After a wonderful train ride from Cusco, we arrived in the early afternoon and were shown to our rooms to change... more

Everyone knows that the Sanctuary Lodge is located right next door to Machu Picchu and because of that some guidebooks lead you to believe that you'll benefit from getting in to the National Park a bit earlier than the rest of the hordes and that makes it worthwhile. Well that's not exactly the case because the park opens at 6:00AM... more

This Orient Express owned property is a low two story building located just outside the main gate to Machu Picchu and at the top of the winding road from the village below. It is expensive but the only property there, all other options are a twenty minute bus ride from Agua Caliente. The rooms are nice, the service is good,... more

The Sanctuary Lodge took me by surprise, for it's a hotel owned by Orient Express, and you would expect super duper top standards! The location is spectacular - it has the best location in the whole of Machu Picchu for it is situated right next to the entrance - perfect for catching the sunrise and sunset! However, I felt the... more

Thank you for your comment. We are glad to hear that service and food were great in our property. Due to the many visitors that arrive in Machu Picchu, there are also many buses specially between noon and 4pm, we changed our mountain view rooms with sound-proof windows that reduce the noise created by these buses. We are deeply thankful...

My husband and I stayed at the Sanctuary Lodge one night in Jan 2009 during our two day visit to Machu Picchu. Despite spending four days in Cusco and the Sacred Valley before Machu Picchu, as sea level dwellers we found the altitude to be a challenge. The ability to go immediately to the hotel, have wonderful food and drink,... more

I stayed there for 2 nights while exploring Machu Picchu. The hotel is traditional but luxurious. All around the property there are streams built into the walkways, the constant sound of water. The property is really a sanctuary, with naturalists who care about wildlife and it's surrounded by hummingbirds and the special cock of the rock bird. Our room was... more

When planning our trip to Machu Picchu, we were shocked to discover that a hotel had been built on its doorstep and how expensive it was. After reading reviews of Aguas Calientas though, we decided to stretch our budget (a lot) to stay at the Sanctuary Lodge for 3 nights. It was our honeymoon after all. We immediately fell in... more
