Spacious Skies Balsam Woods Campground is a hidden paradise of a campground located right in the heart of Maine, just a half hour south of Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in Maine, and 60 miles as the crow flies from the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, Mt. Katahdin, in Baxter State Park. We offer both wooded and open sites that can accommodate most rigs. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, water, 30 or 50-amp electrical service, and most offer sewer. Groups and tent campers are welcome. Our campground has direct trail access to approximately 1,000 miles of ATV trails as designated by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Land. You can ride to Greenville on Moosehead Lake, Jackman, The Forks, Rockwood, Bingham, and Cambridge, all from the campground! We are also less than a minute away driving from Piper Pond, a 2 mile long lake with public boat launch and beach access.

Responded 29 Sept 2023
Hello there, thank you for your feedback. We have found a site lock is a great way to ensure our campers get their favorite site, whether next to the playground, bathhouse, pool, or ATV trails. It is not required; we gaurentee you will get a site that meets your configurations needs! We are happy we got a chance to clear up this misunderstanding and hope to host you again soon for a fun, relaxing, authentic camping experience at this beautiful campground. Camp on!

We have been camping at Balsam for a few years now. Matt and Jaime always made us feel welcomed and they took not only good care of the people but also the campground was sad to hear they sold it. We camped here over Memorial Day weekend and what a disaster this place was with the new ownership. It was dirty nothing was working, and the staff was very short and abrupt with us. We were VERY UNHAPPY during this stay. Even the chubby girl who worked for Matt and was still working for the new guy did not have nice things to say about the new owner. We camped here over Columbus Day weekend to close out our camping season and WOW what a difference a couple months can make. There is a new husband and wife that are managing the campground and they have brought back the feel that we enjoyed with Matt and Jaimie. I chatted with the manager for a good while, and ensured he understood how much of a difference he made sense Memorial Day. Oh and his Pizzas are better than most pizza parlors if you are hungry while there.

Hi there! Big changes have in deed been happening here over the last several months. We have been working to improve facility offerings, site quality, and amenities. We added a gem mining experience, jumping pillow, and soon we will add a dog park for the convenience of our campers. We are happy to hear the improvements are being seen and appreciated. Camp on!

My partner and I stayed at Balsamwoods camping ground over the Labor Day holiday weekend. We had such a great time. If you like being in a true forest type setting this is the place for you. We didn’t want to leave on Monday. Oh and the bathrooms are probably the cleanest camping ground bathrooms you will ever find :). The new owners in the house Brad and Melanie were so welcoming to everyone and made us feel at home. Melanie is such a sweetheart we looked forward to our evening walks up to the store to get ice cream and talk with her. So glad we have reservations already for next year at this place. It’s a perfect escape from Augusta.

This campground is a hidden gem in central Maine. Great staff greeting us upon our arrival, spacious wooded sites that offer privacy and shade because of all the trees, probably the cleanest bath houses I’ve come across and so much to do. Although I don’t have ATVs they have an ATV lot for parking that connects to a trail network. The manager and staff had so many fun activities for the kids the entire weekend and didn’t charge for any of it. Not sure why someone below made a comment about no activities and only interested in money because we didn’t pay for any of the activities to include the ice cream social or the pie contest that my daughter did. The Saturday night movie with free popcorn for the kids was a great touch. My family already booked to return In September for third Halloween weekend.

What a great campground!! Our family enjoyed our stay here. The sites are wooded and provide separation between sites. Probably one of the cleanest campgrounds I have ever stayed at. There is a family from Alaska I think that runs the campground the wife was so friendly when we checked in and when we got our nightly ice cream from the store.

New owners from out of state have purchased. It is about money. Rates have taken a major hike! We reserved last year and was almost sold out, when we arrived this past weekend a ghost town. Even seasonal campers most have gone. No activities, no snack bar as no food license. The excitement "buzz" of a family campground gone. It is a beautiful campground, sites are separated by some trees. ATV trail access from campground.

Lovely little campground. Loved that it was quiet, well managed, clean sites and well kept grounds. Close to shopping, hiking and Greenville / Moosehead Lake. Pool was heated and kept clean. Laundry rooms were clean and washer /dryers worked great. Planning another stay 2022.

Can’t say enough about this campground. It isn’t a large resort - it’s a campground. Sites are wooded with just enough privacy as sites are slightly staggered and have tress between them. Clean and well organized. Enough amenities for everyone to have fun or just relax. Pool and store/grill/office is really nice. Walking trails are great - we actually came across a patch of white and pink ladyslippers! One of us had to work during ur stay and the WiFi was superb! We will definitely be back!

The owners are fantastic, and the place is spacious and park like. Plenty of room for the kids to run and play, and there’s access to lots of trails. The pool is clean, and store is well stocked. They also have cute, well equipped cabins - not like the generic “Kamping Kabins” at most KOAs. This is the kind of place I would bring the in-laws or friends who turn their noses up at camping.

Easily changed our early summer reservation to early October - due to the pandemic. Loved the ease of getting to the campground and into our site. All sizes of sites, many with trees &shrubs between sites, some multiple family areas.Clean, modernized bathhouse, (handicapped accessible,) all the usual playground stuff and more. ATVs welcome, but not allowed to drive around the camper sites. Ample parking near the ATV fuel-up area and well-marked trail to the Maine ATV trails. Snack bar, small store, (game room not open during pandemic). Mostly shaded sites. Wifi available throughout the sites. Many locals on weekends, quieter on the weekdays, quiet hours seem well monitored and respected.
