With the recent economic downturn, I sympathize with Ukrainians and the need to earn more of their local currency for daily life. But service will be the downfall of cities such as L'viv during its development if they continue to take advantage of foreigners.

Although we cannot expect "American" or "Western" European standards of customer service, hotels such as Staryi Krakiv will need to learn eventually that charging 50% extra for checking in 3 hours earlier will not keep customers coming. Before Euro 2012, I sincerely hope some hotels learn and apply this best practice to present a good impression of Ukraine. I know for a fact some Ukrainian hotels show a positive light and excellent standards in the service industry, such as "On the Corner" in Kolomiya, Ukraine.
