We booked a private room one month in advance through hostelbookers. When we arrived (during Chinese New Year) we were informed that there were no rooms available. After talking to hostelbookers (because the man at the front desk spoke very little English) he eventually relented and agreed to let us stay for two nights. However we weren't put in the room we had booked (private, double with a riverside view) but instead what seemed to be a cleaning supply room with a bunk bed. The owners were extremely unhelpful and unsympathetic with our situation- even though they were the ones who had overbooked. After the first night he showed us a nicer private room (similar to what I thought I had booked) and said we could have it if we paid 300 yuan ($50) more. There was another girl we met there who had been put into a similar situation, so we definitely weren't the only ones. I think they might have purposely booked as many people as possible to see who was willing to pay the most. The location is by the river, which might be nice if you're more interested in the city than the beach. It takes about a 15 minute walk through several very busy roads to get to the beach. There were places to get food nearby and it felt safe. That being said, if you book at Sanya Raintree Backpackers Hostel I would strongly recommend calling in advance. But overall I think paying a little more and going to a different hostel would be best.

I booked this hostel on the 14th January 2015 over a month before we were due to stay at the cost of 1000 RMB for two people in a standard double twin room over the spring festival break. 3 days before we were due to stay I had a email informing me that they could no longer grant our booking as there was no availability at the hotel. So I rang them up without telling them that I had had my reservation cancelled and asked if there were any rooms available for the dates that we had originally booked and they replied with yes! Upon hearing this I asked them why they had canceled our booking and they explained to me they had made a mistake and hadn't changed the prices for the spring festival season on the Internet and they couldn't let us stay at the hostel for the 1000 RMB that we had made our reservation on. They offered us to stay at the hostel again but it would be nearly 3 times the price we were going to pay before and we couldn't afford that! Being spring festival at this time in China we thought it would be hard to get a hotel and a good price so we looked around and unfortunately we couldn't beacuse of the such late notice of the cancelation and everywhere was just so expensive or no availability! So we had no choice but to cancel out flights to Sanya to stay here for our holiday we were very much looking forward too! Not only did you ruined our spring festvial beacuse of your stupid mistake you also made us lose out on nearly 5000 RMB for flights that we couldn't take beacuse if we travelled down to Sanya we would have been homeless for 6 nights. So the moral of the story don't book with this unrealible, lying and untrustworthy hostel beacuse they also might ruined your travel plans, wastes your money and ruin your holiday.

This hostel was great for what you pay for. We stayed in a single room the first night and upgraded to a room with a view, which I highly recommend. Justin was great and helped us plan a surf trip. The only negative part was that the beds were super hard, it was like sleeping on a boxspring only.

This was a cool hostel. THe owner Justin, was awesome, he gets really involved and helpful if you want or need. He will take you to places where most tourists to Sanya don't know about. Its great. He helps set up day trips into the mountains or to the beaches or for surfing. It was alot of fun. The hostel its self was clean comfortable and had a great view. Really nice place! will always stay there if I go back!

I stayed in the Raintree hostel for two weeks and I had a really great time. I had a double room which was very neat, but at the same time very cheap. You couldn't wish for anything more for that kind of money, but what really makes the place shine is the staff.. They were very friendly and helped out with finding fun things to do, great places to eat, and awesome people to meet, which is extremely nice for a tourist in China that does not speak Chinese! They even did my loundry, organized parties, and an activity day on which we went kite surfing, snorkling, quad riding, banana boat riding, and a very nice bbq. I would definately recommend this place to my friends!

Justin helped us a lot, before we even arrived at the hostel. He helped us, get from the train station to his place and was also very helpful by arranging different day trip-tours for us. The day tour with Justin was one of the best days in Sanya: he took us to a nice small beach where we did snorkling, swimming, banana boat, jetski and barbecueing, and got to know each other and met new people - totally worth it. We had a double room, which was clean and comfortable. We had riversight, a fridge and a tv. For an additional 15 RMB it's possible to have lunch or dinner at the hostel. The Location of the hostel is very good. It's 3 stops (=1Yuan) by bus to the beach. We would recommend this hostel for everybody who likes to be near the beach, want a priceable room and having nice people around.

Sanya was a perfect spot to relax and get away from all the stress in the world. After a long year of studying and beginning a summer internship it was the perfect thing to de-stress the body. On our tight budget it was pure luck that we found this amazing place to stay. The location of the Raintree hostel is impeccable. Its located right on the river and is close to many dining options, beaches, clubs, bars, etc. Raintree hostel was also right across the street from the bus station that took you everywhere and anywhere you needed to go. The rooms were very clean and incredibly comfortable. The staff was just like family; they even offered to cook a seafood meal for us because it was too expensive in restaurants. They offer bike rentals per day and get you great quality mountain bikes that really allow you to take in the beauty of Sanya. Raintree was everything that wanted and needed for a great relaxing vacation. The price is unbeatable for the quality of service that you get. I would definitely go back in a heartbeat.

As a surfer I had to choose this hostel for it´s owner is a local who knows some nice spots. The hostel itself offers a nice secure shelter (which is the most important thing if you come to China as a Western country citizen who doesn´t speak any Chinese. The service and stuff is pretty nice and the rooms are clean, the price is very fair. What´s missing for 5 stars is the breakfast. Altogether recommendable indeed!

OK I'm been in 2 minds to write this Review. I was attracted to this Hostel because it seemed it might be a little remote from the city, and with the Owner fluent in English I might get some assistance in arranging tours etc. Firstly, it's bang in the middle of Sanya City, within easy walking to shops, KTV's and a fantastic night market ( for food and cafes)!! But being across the river from all the action, it is reasonably quiet. There are any number of buses outside the Hostel. And if you go across the busy road and peer to the right, you might spot some mangroves on the river....The closest you'll get to a native environment. It's a Hotel that's been newly decorated and re-badged as a Hostel - yes the photo's are accurate!!. The bed was comfortable and clean, bathroom dated, but clean with good supply of hot water. The lounge is spacious and wi-fi OK, the workers very friendly and helpful, but the English speaking owner was no-where to be seen. It would have been nice if some of the large menu in the in-house cafe was in English. Ditto, tours could be booked, only if you spoke Mandarin. Finally, it's hard to find and Sanya taxi-drivers very reluctant to deal with a "lao-wei". ( as with other parts of China, Google maps are very inaccurate..!!). From the new Sanya Railway Station ( turn left as you exit the station - at the far end of the station), the no: 4 bus drives right past the front door - but you have to know when to get off!! The Sanya Tourist Maps have the bus routes, so once you've found the hostel - it took me 5 hours - you're set!! ( A printable map in Mandarin on the web-site would be a great idea!! ). Oh, Sanya beaches are a GREAT place to see in Chinese New Year....

The Sanya Raintree Backpacker Hostel was in the perfect location, with buses leaving for different destinations nearly on its doorstep. We especially liked taking the 30 minute bus to the beautiful Yalong Bay. Justin and his team are very friendly and helpful, giving plenty of tips and advice on where to go. They also organised lovely day trips for us, for a good price, to a lovely lagoon, where we had a very fun day snorkeling amongst coral reefs, paddle boarding etc and to a place called Monkey Island. There are many other places they can help you access, you only need ask. The rooms are very pretty and colourful as well as impeccably clean. All in all it was a lovely, friendly and relaxing place to stay, as soon as I can I would love to hop on a plane back to Sanya!
