Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Call Issue! Whoever is answering the calls in Cathay Hotel Suva needs to go through proper training on how to answer and to speak to whomsoever called. This is the WORST call experience I've ever attended!

The hot water, the toilet and the air condition was not working but I paid $92 for the bed I slept on. The lady Manager is not even worth talking to as she is full of attitude and arrogance. I slept in one room and used toilet in another room which a kind employee arrange for.

Once again our group stayed for 2 weeks in August 2018 . The accommodation was as expected as we have stayed before and it suits our needs. However we all commented that the standards of cleanliness have slipped noticeably from last year. This year , during our stay we noted that the pool was not cleaned and the paving around the pool was very dirty and quite slippery . Last visit they had a cleaner attending the pool area every day In the room , we had our doubts that the floor was ever mopped during the stay . The mirror in the bathroom was never cleaned during this time and the floor in the bathroom and shower was unclean. The most concerning was the Sanitary bin in the bathroom, It still contained waste from previous visitors [ yuk ] , and remained this way during our stay I know it is all price relative , and it is of a Budget Fiji style, but these are basic safety requirement concerns. Be cautious of the photos on their web site , especially around the pool and entertainment area upstairs as they are quite out of date , and look to be taken when the Hotel was in its prime Because it is on a main road it can be noisy at night with trucks traveling to the port , however this was of no concern to our group , we all slept well On the UP side , staff were very accommodating, trustworthy, happy & friendly and it is easy walking distance to supermarkets and the town center Large supermarket just a block away , which we used for breakfast and lunch supplies Would we stay again Yes possibly , given the same opportunity as we were not after anything special As management does not reply to these reviews i would not hold your breath on any improvements soon , which is unprofessional in our view

We checked in on a Saturday afternoon for 5nights, receptionist was rude and wasn't helpful even though their were 3ladies on shift (NO Bula Smile), we had paid for all accommodation at the Suva branch except for the extra Pax which we were suppose to pay upon check in and to our surprise they told us to pay $40+ FJD for the balance which they miss calculated....Room was pathetic, housekeeping came to service the room everyday yet the floors were dirty and drowers were dusty from the day we checked in, even the pool is not clean and the hotel compound is full of rubbish every single day... Telephone doesn't even work I wouldn't recommend this hotel more like a motel to any of my colleagues ... Ps: Reception called me via mobile phone early Friday morning to ask our check out time? I said that we paid everything and to check out Saturday morning and her reply was that nothing was written on the guest reg or anyone has told her but she called her Suva office n they said everything has been paid upon check in....Not even an apology was given or a happy face only her grumpy face and she answered a call 🙄 front office staff need to go through proper training ....

This hotel makes Fawlty Towers look good. Staff are friendly however rooms require maintenance and a good clean. My tap not just leaked but ran for 10 days before a repair was made. Breakfast is a joke with paperwork in triplicate to order instant coffee and toast. Last day we waited 55 minutes for this. When we asked what the hold up was, found the dishes had not been washed from the day before and they had no bread or jam and were waiting for the supermarket to open!

A group of 7 stayed on a volunteer working group for 2 weeks This accom suited our needs . Nothing flash or fancy Bed was comfy , shower was cold most times , and cleanliness in the room was to Fiji standard ( average ) Everything is price relative Pool area was clean , and staff were helpful and very happy , obviously affected by the sat cyclone. Very easy 2-3 min walking distance to town and many eating options Large supermarket just a block away , which we used for breakfast and lunch supplies Would we stay again Yes , given the same opportunity

We stayed here for two weeks in a renovated air conditioned room. This is budget accommodation but clean and everything worked. There were no signs of pests or bugs and the rooms were cleaned daily. Breakfast is limited to an 8 FJ toast and herewith coffee or better still go to the bakery next door for a delicious 3FJ pie.

The Cathay is a step back in time with its grand piano and sofa in the lounge area to the rooms basic setting. It a budget accomdation which gives you the basic things[ like kettle and tea stuff and bar fridge and air con , TP was provided but other toiletries were not and your towel if you needed one was paied for by deposite of $10] for a one day sleep over. They don't have TV's in the rooms. The atmosphere is relaxing and carefree. If you looking for a star treatment this is not the place for you. I loved the old feeling of this hotel the pool area over looking the Shirley park gives you a sense of how majestic this hotel may have been once upon a time. overall good location in the middle of town and within walking distance of everything . supermarket right next door where you can pick up breakfast from the bakery or across the road the Northern Club serviced great meals.

Very unprofessional rooms were not ready until 4pm check out at 10am. Rooms were filthy ceiling fans had thick dust on the blades and were hot and stuffy, broken tiles leaking taps and dirty walls. Unfriendly service and we were not advised if there was breakfast available and it was served up till 9am. You are also charged to use towels and pay deposit which you got back only when the rooms were checked before you checked out really, come on. Seriously needs to be upgraded and improved to meet hygiene standards for the health and safety of every traveller.

I have stayed in Lautoka many times, but always passed this hotel by, for some reason. But I am a budget traveller and I thought I would give it a try, as it has dorm rooms and a pool. I am not sure why it is so empty, it had almost everything I needed. For $25 Fijian a night I was in one of the best dorm rooms I have ever experienced - ensuite bathroom with shower, easy chairs, a writing dest and an outlet to charge your devices. It helped that I was alone in the room, but it would not have been cramped with others. The pool is a godsend given the hot weather, and there its large screen TV lounge. The staff were very obliging. The only thing it lacks that I expect in a backpacker kind of place is a kitchen that guest can use to cook their own meals. It is close to shopping and an array of restaurants, guests are welcome at private club across the road, the Northern Club, a cheerful place that serves great meals at reasonable prices. And, wonder of wonders for low-end places in Fiji, they take credit cards!
