Lauries Hotel was built in the 1850's and was once a favourite with high-society British inhabitants. We saw the framed letter of thanks following the stay of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip in 1961.
The hotel consists of two long one-storey collonaded white-washed wings, once ending in taller constructions at each end. Part of one wing no longer forms part of the hotel, and the three-storey building at the end of the other wing is abandoned and derelict. But it stands in pleasant grounds, with a 1930s-style swimming pool, once very smart - unfortunately empty and unused. It is said to be open in the summer months, but it looked somewhat too dilapidated to me.
Rooms and the bed were large and comfortable, the lavatory, bath and shower old fashioned but perfectly serviceable. Breakfast was brought to our room in the morning to order, and room service was good.
