My wife and I went to Nihiwatu for our honeymoon. We picked it because we didn't want a huge resort with a bunch of people. We wanted a more intimate place. We had no idea how good our selection was until we got there. The island of Sumba is very underdeveloped. It is about a 1.5 hour drive from the... More

Nihiwatu is a very special, uneffected place. The experience is unlike any we have ever had because of the beautiful location, amazing staff, intimacy, and view into the culture and people of Sumba. Ernst, Ben, Marthen, Mary, and Nella, along with the rest of the staff, help to make your stay unforgettable. Surfing, scuba diving, fishing, hiking to an awesome... More

We had a great time at Nihiwatu, especially because the staff is so nice. The visit to the local villages with the typical Sumba houses was very interesting. The current bungalows are a bit run down and will be redone, which is good. The new Nihiwatu now being build is quite different in style and concept, I am curious what... More

Wonderful place, wonderful staff, wonderful food, wonderful ethos amongst the local community. We had a truly brilliant time from the moment we were welcomed in by Ernst, then through the adventures of horse riding in the jungle to the surfing to the yoga to the occasional glass of Tequilla. I can't fault it. More

What an amazing place! There really aren't words to describe the experience we had at Nihiwatu. We were situated on one of the most romantic stretches of beach in the world with complete privacy. The staff was great and truly made the experience a very special one. We had one of the most wonderful couples massages at sunset followed by... More

Pure, total perfection. I actually don't know where to start and no words I can write within this review can begin to give any idea quite how wonderful Nihiwatu is. Sumba contrasts quite starkly to the greener climbs of Bali, with the scenery quite dry and possibly more akin to Nothern Australia. Nihiwatu is situated approximately 90 minutes from Sumba's... I am always hesitant to go to a place when so much already has been said and like a good film review, your expectations are so high that you end up slightly disappointed...With Nihiwatu, it was certainly not the case! It is small, it is intimate, it is relaxing to the extreme, it is spectacular, it is primitive and at... More

We returned from Nihiwatu about 3 weeks ago and all I can think about is returning. Nihiwatu is the product of an extraordinary vision: that a truly magnificent hotel could be established in a remote and beautiful place and in doing so the people who own that place would be involved and their children and their children's children would benefit... Dear KWC_11 Thank you, your review sums up Nihiwatu and The Sumba Foundation's vision succinctly. Every guest visit has a positive direct impact on our neighbours in this region of the island, and as support grows, so too does the area and number of people affected. Instead of just enjoying the facilities of the property, we encourage all of our... More

The staff at Nihiwatu was outstanding and very attentive, from the moment we met at the Denpasar Airport to the day we left. The drive to Nihiwatu is long, just soak in the scenery and time will quickly pass. You will be amazed at how simple the Sumbanese people live. The location of the resort couldn't be in a better... The untouched beauty of Nihiwatu and its surrounds is an absolute treasure - we felt privileged to be indulging in its environs every day. We spent a week there - late 30s couple plus our 22 mth daughter - and came away feeling like we had been away a month. We are an active couple (and toddler) and found limitless... More

Dear SarT74 Thank you for you review. We are fortunate to have a great team of babysitters here to provide excellent care for our younger guests. It is our intention that everyone who leaves us feels that they have become part of the Nihiwatu Family, and I'm glad that was the case with you too. Best wishes Ernst and the... More
