Arrived at the Vatan in Izmir hot and tired after a long journey from Istanbul. We initially were impressed by the hotel foyer and were offered drinks but should have become suspicious when we were asked to pay up-front for our two night stay. Proliferation of staff who could have been better employed carrying out basic repairs and maintenance rather than hanging around in reception. The room was not good - the smoke alarm was hanging off the ceiling, bed head board was hanging off the wall, the bathroom had the cheapest possible fittings although it was quite clean. The breakfast buffet was basic in a long thin room with plastic flowers. We had hoped to eat outside in the garden but this is obviously not used much. Generally, we felt uncomfortable - hustled to eat in the restaurant next door, to give tips. The running of the hotel seemed unprofessional and we wouldn't recommend it to anyone. more
