If you are keen on the Ryokan experience, then this hotel is probably OK, but definitely nowhere to rave about. On the plus side we did have a big room but it looked out over the hotel's plant area (electrics, boilers etc which hummed all night) and tall trees. It rained a lot when we were there and as it... After spending quite some time going back and forth over which place to stay in Hakone for 2 nights, I decided to go with Setsugetsuka. I made the right choice! First of all, I wanted a private onsen, but not too expensive. As well, I wanted the traditional Japanese Ryokan experience that included breakfast and dinner. Some places charge more... More

First, if you come for 1 day only, don't plan your Hakone itinerary on Wednesday as many places close on Wednesday! We arrived on a rainy day by car rental, although it was very close to train station (which was a selling point). When we arrived the hotel was packed of people, with kids running around. Lobby staff spoke good... More

I planned my trip in late March and It's very difficult to find a onsen hotel in earl Apr. I managed to find one through internet. I did not expect much because of this hurry arrangement. This onsen hotel is relatively new. Service is not perfect but good, comparable to usual standard of other japan onsen hotel. The food is... More

We LOVE this hotel and it definitely the highlight of our Hakone Trip! Here's some tips: 1. Check in early: there are lots of things at the hotel to fulfill your Japan experience! 2. Reserve your seat and dinner in advance so you get your pick! 3. Make sure you pick your own yukata from the lobby. It's free, comes... More

Here are a few things why you should make Setsugetsuka your place to stay when u are in Hakone: 1) Literally a stone's throw away from the Gora station (A savior when you need to lug your big luggage around) 2) The service is simply impeccable! The staff are all so wonderful and helpful that I wished I could stay... More

We chose this ryokan because it seemed to have that traditional edge but with all the modern facilities. We were not disappointed. It is definitely quite expensive to stay here, almost AUD500 a night, but we stayed 2 nights and did not regret it. The room had comfortable futons, excellent toilet and shower facilities and a traditional tub on the... More

Hotel Setsugetsuka was great. We drove in from nearby Shizuoka. The rooms, onsen and garden are gorgeous. The shabu shabu dinner was excellent. There was plenty of food so by the end of the meal, I couldn't eat any more even though I wanted to. This was a wonderful place to stay.

It is an ideal place, with wonderful private onsen and open air bath on the room. The rooms are incredible, large and with attention paid to every detail. The beds are very confortable and the place perfect for a day of rain. There are two restaurants, one offering the typical Ryokan menu, which is quite average and not at the... More

We had no difficulty finding the place as it was almost right outside Gora station. This is a great plus point as we were tired out from the long journey and multiple transfers from Tokyo Hibiya to Gora. The staff in Setsugetsuka are generally very helpful despite not being as fluent in English (this aim-to-please Japanese service level is generally... More
