Prior to this, went to two other ryokans so in a good position to compare; out of the three, this is the pits! On arrival, the male attendants were extremely polite, we were well received until the maid came. Its likely she didn't like foreigners and there were definitely a lot of foreigners who visit there; her attitude was distinctly... More

We went there back in March 2010 but I still remember that this was an amazing first time ryokan experience complete with a beautiful kaiseki (traditional multi-course Japanese dinner) experience for dinner and breakfast. Service was great, our room was prepared for us and the futon was very comfortable. Our room also had a private open bath area and a... More

It was pouring rain and we had just walked almost a mile from the bus stop (don't trust the map on their website!) and were soaking wet. But once we made it to the front door, we were whisked in, dried off, and settled into our traditional tatami-mat room. The nice open balcony looked out on a mist-shrouded, low-mountain terrain... We wanted to spend a couple of days in Hakone during our family holiday in Japan and were keen to stay the night in an authentic Japanese ryokan. Did lots of research before deciding upon the Mikawaya and am glad to say we chose well. Managed to get from the Sheraton Grande Tokyo Bay to Shinjuku station and then on... More

The Mikawaya was a great disappointment in many areas. To name a few: (1) Food. This was well below the standard of other ryokan that we have stayed at. Dishes that should have been served hot were served lukewarm or cold. Some dishes contained western elements (such as mayonnaise dressing) which neither seemed appropriate, nor tasted particularly good. It was... More

Great place to relax with a very serene setting, the room is very spacious and clean. Traditional on its outlook, but very well maintained. Access to transportation is not bad too. Although direct buses to most places do not stop just outside, but it is only 3 mins walk from Yunnessun, which has most of the buses going anywhere from... More

We stayed in Hana Room 1 - see their website/standard room/Japanese style room with open air bath(onsen). The room is on the ground floor and there is a running "pipe" which brings hot spring water into the onsen. Although the room does not have an attached shower/bath, there is a small shower area next to the onsen for you to... More

The ryokan is located next to the bus-stop (Horai-en) and easily accessible by Tozan bus. It was a 20 minutes bus trip to Yumoto-station with a full street of shopping. The food was fantastic! We booked the room with open-air onsen, though costly but after the stay, it was worthwhile. It was romantic and relaxing. One of the course of... More

Stayed one night in a room with western-style bathroom and open-air bath (definitely worth dropping a few more dollars for the open-air bath as it's essentially like having your own hot tub). The ryokan is located right on the highway and easily accessible via the Hakone Free-Pass bus route, with the stop located just outside the main entrance (we actually... More

We stayed in the Mikawaya for two nights as the highlight of our honeymoon, and it was excellent! We stayed in the room named Tsu Tsu Ji (or something like it), which is actually a small bungalow. It's described on their website as the Japanese style villa with open-air bath. At JPY 39000 per person per night, it was very... More
