I visit Sendai quite often. The first time I booked a package including shinkansen and hotel, and we got stuck at the Pearl Hotel which was ok.
Now I just drive up, and since I'm young and single, and don't need a luxury hotel, this place is perfect for me.
The rooms are clean but typically small, the beds are comfortable, and the staff are really friendly! I asked them how to get to Rikyu for dinner and then how to get out to Matsushima Bay and they were very polite, photocopied maps and highlighted routes for me and knew the area quite well.
On the first floor of the hotel is a Mini Stop convenience store, which is great for a snack or late night drink. Next to the parking lot is a Don Quixote Superstore which has everything you need in case you forgot something. Across the street is the section of town with lots of restaurants, bars, clubs etc...
It's about a 15 minute walk from the main Sendai station, but it's close to a subway station. There's an oyster bar...
