A nice guesthouse situated in Chinatown, close to the Waterfront and within walking distance of many restaurants and sites. Outside the entrance is a small café that serves rice and noodle dishes and local snacks. Inside is the reception/office area, then the lounge area decorated to look like a Dayak longhouse, very cozy. There’s one pay-to-use computer with internet in the front and there’s a TV with a large collection of DVDs and a few books and magazines in the lounge. In the back is a kitchen area with a water dispenser, fridge, and small tables. Upstairs are two levels of rooms. I booked a women’s dorm room but it was full when I arrived so I got a single room for the same price for two nights. The manager Shawn has worked as a tour guide in the past and willingly doles out travel advice and conversation. He gave me a map of Kuching and showed me some places to go. He and the staff answered my many questions about nearby eateries, money changers, getting to the orangutan... more
