I was on my way to another hostal recommended by a local travel agency when someone came out of Hostal Colonial and insisted that I check out his property first, with promises of special deals for backpackers. I told him where I was going, and he wanted to match the price. Having read before that Hostal Colonial was nicer and... more

Pricewise and locationwise this nice little 3-story (no lift) hotel is hard to beat. It offers basic accommodation in rooms with comfortable bed(s), private bathrooms with hot showers (towels changed daily, one day fluffy and new, next day old like sandpaper), cable TV with CNN, ventilator (no a/c which is rarely needed here) located on the quiet side of town... more

As other reviewers have mentioned, there is a lack of good quality mid-range accommodation in town. On the plus side, this hotel is central, reasonably priced and rooms are clean. However, the quality of the rooms seems to vary greatly. Ours was OK, but slightly shabby around the edges, with polyester bedding. The paintwork is dark red, which aspires to... more

There seems to be a dearth of good hotels in the historic centre of Trujillo, which is a shame given the number of fine old colonial mansions there are (most are used by banks). The Colonial is certainly central and it´s certainly cheap, but I don´t really recommend it. It is poular with Peruvian groups, who spend much of the... more

Upon arrival in Hostal Colonial, they were fast in getting us the rooms ready. Once in the room, first impression was very positive. Nicely cleaned, comfortable, TV cable included. No telephone. No AC but we were provided with a fan that allowed us to sleep nicely. Hot water was not a problem. The only small issue in the bathroom was... more

Well, if you are not concerned about damp & mildewy rooms, no hot water, soft mattresses, nylonesque sheets, noisy corridors, carpets/light switchs/skirting boards that don´t look like they have ever been cleaned then you´ll have no problem here. The rates are very low, so you do get what you paid for. On a positive the staff were friendly, the bathroom... more

the hotel is an old mansion turned into a hostal, we were only here for 1 night but thumbs up for this place because 1) price - at only $19 a night, it was a steal (this was the cheapest place we stayed at during our 2 weeks in Peru but it was not bad at all, compared to at... more

Nice clean hostal with reliable hot water. It’s a very cute place with character and charm - an old mansion converted into a hostal, and a lot of the rooms open up to patios with chairs. Theres a cheap restaurant downstairs that will bring you room service and the reception desk also runs tours to Chan Chan and the Huacas.... more

Only a block or two from the Plaza, Hostal Colonial was a nice spot to stay. At first we got a room in the 1970's-style addition, which was rather run-down and noisy. After the first night we switched to a lovely room in the rear with access to the back garden, for the same price. They were very nice about... more
