We flew into Kansai airport and hopped straight on a train for Kyoto. After close to 30 hours of travel (and only 3 hours sleep) we arrived at Maifukan too early to check in so went for a walk around the back streets and alleys of Gion. What a gorgeous place, and many maiko geisha seen along the way! Maifukan... More

Our group of 4 friends stayed at Gion Maifukan in 2 twin rooms. The rooms are quite large for Japan standards, however the toilet/shower are the typical "unit" kit styles that are common in hotels in Japan (i.e. small). As we didnt stay in the hotel that often, we dont really have further comment about the rooms, but they were... More

This hotel has a very good location, right in Gion, close to bus stops, but still very quiet. The hotel is rather basic, the Japanese room is nice. I wouldn't say it has a lot of character, but it is clean and the staff is very nice.

This was my favorite hotel out of 6 hotels that I stayed in Japan. The room was huge for a ryokan, private toilet, private shower, and comfortable futon. Very friendly staff, who took the time to greet us, open the elevator, open the door, and explain how to get to certain landmarks. They have an AppleTV and wi-fi in the... More

We were late in booking a hotel in Kyoto and many hotels were full given it was cherry blossom season (Sakura). We booked this hotel at the last minute. Rooms were large and clean. It was quiet. Excellent location. Very helpful staff.

Recently stayed several nights during the Sakura season. Great location, easy walking to popular sights and to the Gion area. The hotel is super clean, functional and pleasantly styled with wonderfully polite staff who will willingly do whatever they can to help arrange and book restaurants and transport. Breakfast is served two blocks away at a local cafe, which is... More

Great location, clean quiet room, friendly and helpful staff. Very affordable. We were too early for the Cherry Blossoms but one staff member showed us the brochure about the Lantern lined streets at night, it was magical and full of tourists but a nice treat. We had a western room (beds are a little firmer than we are used to... More

Amazing, lovely place. Feared a ryokan would be too rustic for my teens (and me) but was more than pleasantly surprised. Location in Gion is great (loads af temples and restaurants). Room came with garden, private wc, wifi, etc. Staff was incredibly accomodating for ryokan beginners!! Sleeping on floor is fine! Only regret is not booking more nights!

We were travelling in a group and keen to experience an authentic Japanese atmosphere. The top level Ryokan in Kyoto can cost upwards of NZD $1000/night per person which really wasn't doable for the family of four that was travelling with us. Maifukan was a good compromise. It is a Ryokan hotel in a larger modern building rather than a... More
