I have stayed at this exact location 2 years ago and found it very convenient. This Toyoko Inn is situated on Karasuma about midway between Gojo and Shijo. Although it is not in the busiest downtown stretch ( like the Shijo one), it is easily manageable to walk to Kyoto Station ( 10-15 minute walk) or Shijo (10 minute walk).... more
You don't get much better than the chain of Toyoko Inns. They are always clean, decent, have internet access, include breakfast, and are always in the center of downtown or right next to the train stations.
