Despite the noticeable extra costs compared to a "standard western style hotel" - we chose to stay all 4 nights i Kyoto in a REAL Japanese "Hotel" - the Yoshi Ima. And it was worth every penny. An absolutely wonderful expirience. We got a big room 'in the garden' - that is you had to pass through the garden to... more

We were warned by the Japanese travel company to stay only one night in this ryokan because 'western tourist have trouble to sleep'! Rubbish! We enjoyed one of the best night's sleep of our whole holiday and would happily have stayed there for all three nights of our stay in Kyoto. The lady who served our meals and did the... more

The ryokan is pretty and in a v good location - right in the centre of Gion (the street behind the ryokan is a unesco heritage site, with the tradinional japanese tea houses). Our room was as expected, decorated simply in japanese style. The bathroom was small and had probably been fitted in the 70s/80s, although I saw other rooms... more

After reading some of the earlier reviews on this Ryokan, it was 3rd on my list of choices. We ended up staying here as the other two were booked out and we were so glad it ended up that way! We arrived early, were greeted warmly and our luggage was looked after so we could go for a wander and... more

Staying here was the highlight of my trip to Kyoto. Breakfast and dinner was served everyday by the sweet woman serving as my maid. Her English and my Japanese weren't very good, but that made the experience all the more fun. The food was wonderful, even if I didn't always know what I was eating. There was also English speaking... more

First i cannot even express in words how awesome this place was. Tucked in the quiet historic area of Gion the area around this inn only adds to the experience. The JTB who we booked our tour with fought us in trying to stay in this place. They said it wasn't up to "western standers" and we wouldn't like it.... more

This Ryokan should have been one of the highlights of my recent holiday in Japan because it has all the ingrediants but it falls down due to the offhand attitude of the staff I arrived 2 hours too early to check in so I had to leave my luggage in the lobby. I had to struggle in Japanese slippers which... more

The ryokan Yoshi-ima was not worth the money. It is beautiful and immerse in old fascioned japanese atmosphere, but: Every morning the breakfast was served not later than 8.30 (this was unacceptable after a day of a long trip) and the dinner not later than 19 (when we were not hungry....), the night you cannot come back later than 23.....you... more

The Ryokan "Yoshi-ima" was not worth the money. Our room was shabby, after taking a bath the floor was afloat, lights had to be switched off at the entrance of the room. The "western style" breakfast consisted of 1,5 slices of toast, a negligible amount of fruit and alternatively bacon/eggs or cornflakes (not both!), so we were still hungry after... more

Staying in Tokyo on business, used the "Japan Tourist Board" Sunrise company to great package of Hikari high speed train + stay at the Yoshi-ima. The 34.500 yen cost was a bargain compared to the individual costs of the hotel (which includes breakfast and dinner) plus train. The hotel itself was a wonderful experience, set in the heart of the... more
