My daughter and I are Japanese speakers and have stayed in many ryokan across Japan. For the last night of our holiday, we wanted to give our mid-Western, first-time-in-Japan friends a taste of something really different. We were a little apprehensive as our friends had found even modern Japan rather an otherworldly experience, and didn't like much else but American... more

We stayed at Motonago during our honeymoon trip in Japan, and were very pleased with the entire experience. This was the first time we stayed in a ryokan, and we were really glad that we did it. The location of the ryokan is the best you could expect in Kyoto - literally right there on the best site. The streets... more

Having never stayed in a traditional Ryokan before, I can't say if the level of service and attention to detail at Motonago is normal for a Ryokan, but I can say that Motonago is the best experience I have ever had at any hotel or b&b in the world. We had our own personal attendant, Toki, who was like a... more

Do print out a good map of Motonago before you go as our cab driver had difficulty locating the ryokan even with the Japanese address and a simple map. But Motonago is very centrally located to walk around Higashiyama and Gion. Service is really good. It was raining when we're there and my only pair of shoes was throughly soaked.... more

We had lovely stay in Motonago for two nights. It's strategically located in the middle of temple area. Temples in Kyoto are never boring, they are really really different from each other. Our room was on groundfloor and had a beautiful small courtyard outside. It was really quiet. Service in the ryokan was really good and friendly, we had somebody... more

I booked the Motonago on the Japanese Inns website for my family of four, all over 16 years old. The location is quite thrilling, right in Gion and a very short walk to Kiyomizu-dera, the most visited temple in Kyoto. Even our cab driver needed GPS to find the Motonago. The hotel staff were extremely gracious and took our bags... more

The location of this ryokan is amazing. The streets are from another era and this is area is the Japan of your dreams. The ryokan itself is not as idyllic as I would've liked, especially given the high price. Also, it was frustrating communicating with some of the staff. Their Japanese dinner was very good. more

We stayed for a night as it was more of a treat at 399 yen. The first thing that hit me was the smell of the tatami mats; very fresh and transported me to the countryside. We didn't have an ensuite toilet but the public toilets were modern (automatic flush etc). I thought the 14 course dinner was a feast... more

We stayed in quite a few ryokans in Japan and unfortunately this one rated last on our list of places we would recommend. The room we had was the tiniest space we have ever stayed in (literally just room for 2 tatamis) so that was quite a shame taking into account the amount we paid (Yen 39,900 = at current... more
