Our first stop of a 5 month holiday, we stayed for 3 nights. Early April is Cherry Blossum season and quite busy. We flew in to Osaka and caught the airport Express to Kyoto train station. Although the Nishiyama is quite central in Kyoto terms it's still a fair way from Kyoto Station and with baggage etc a taxi is... more

Thank you very much for staying with us. Kyoto has many popular Cherry Blossoms-viewing spots so hope you have enjoyed Sakura (Cherry blossoms) in Kyoto. We are located in very convenient place to see the sights in Kyoto. However we are little far away from the Kyoto station. There are transports either Subway, Bus and taxi from Kyoto station to...

Nishiyama is more of a hotel than a traditional Japanse inn (ryokan) - with four floors and many rooms - so going there won't give you a 100% ryokan-experience, but it nevertheless was worth while staying there. Rooms are tatami-style, clean, spacious and equiped with TV and a private bathroom. In the basement is a big public bath (onsen, but... more

Thank you for staying with us and your helpful response. We have refurbished our exterior and many other things during the last year. Our aim is to be the Ryokan that is accessible to any customers from any culture or backgrounds. Therefore we have taken a modern flavor to our building. The rooms are in Japanese style with Tatami mats,...

we stayed in a traditional japanese-style room in this lovely ryokan, which was quite easy to find from the subway station, based on the directions on the web site. the room was quite large and very comfy, with a little table set up with tea and cookies and plush futon bedding that instantly relaxed us. our only concern was that... more

Thank you for your stay and your review. Your frank opinion is greatly appreciated. We should explain the door has to be locked before leaving the room. Same thing might have happned to other guests. We are also happy to hear that you seemed to enjoy staying with us and the public bath. We are looking forward to seeing you...

I've read a few of these reviews and think people are a bit tedious. Yes, it difficult to find as it is on a side alley, but we had some fun walking the streets exploring trying to do so. No better way to get to know a place than getting lost in it. It's a small place as most Ryokans... more

Thank you for staying with us. We are very happy that you recall our ryokan. The building was renovated in August last year, so it looks little bit different. Dinning room was also changed its style. New chairs and new tables are been placing now. The name changed to NISHIYAMA RYOKAN. There was little change but we always welcome our...

The Frugal Traveler made a great recommendation with the Nishiyama. I stayed in a traditional Japanese style room and was pleasantly surprised to have a view of the garden waterfall (unlike the Traveler). The room was immaculately clean, and a nice change from western style hotels. The bathroom was small but efficient. There was also an extra sink in the... more

Thank you for your stay and review. We do our best to accommodate our guests during their stay. As you say, English speaking stuff is one of the best parts for us, so that the guests can communicate with us. We are learning Kyoto so we can recommend our guests where to go for sightseeing or eating. Also we study...

My wife and I booked two night at this "Ryokan" and assumed it would be a great experience given the price of £250 per night with dinner and breakfast. I thought it would border on a luxury ryokan but boy was I mistaken. We had just arrived to Kyoto from Takayama where we stayed in a beautiful authentic Ryokan called... more

Thank you for staying with us and we are greatly sorry for this inconvenience we have caused you. It is hard to describe what Ryokan is exactly like so that sometimes misunderstanding arises. We all discuss this matter and will try to provide clearer information for the guests. Please let us explain our facility simply. Our ryokan is modern style;...

I was worried about staying at the Nishiyama because of some of the negative reviews, but I was very charmed by the experience. I had a bit of difficulty finding the place (make a left at the ampm convenience store, then make your NEXT left!), but that was OK. It's actually located in quite an ideal part of town for... more

Thank you for staying with us. We do our best to please our guests more and more. We have held a Japanese cultural event such as Koto (Japanese stringed musical instrument) concert, tea ceremony and Japanese calligraphy experience about twice a month for last few years. This year, we were under construction from June to August because of changing our...

We are a family of four who stayed one night in August. The luxury ryokan pictured on the Hotel's website in no way resembles the actual hotel. We stayed in a traditional Japanese style room and found it to be quite run down, dark, and uncomfortable. The walls and screen dividers were stained and the paint was peeling. The bathroom... more

Thank you for staying with us. We are terribly sorry that we didn’t meet your needs. We do make an effort to be the ryokan that makes our guests satisfied with guests’ voices. Concerning guests’ rooms, we renovate them little by little although it is inevitable that the wallpaper is getting dirty. However we are thinking of replacing new one...

Stayed in this hotel for 2 nites in July, 2008. Good: 1) Located like 10 mins from a subway station and within walking distance (15- 20 mins walk) to the main shopping street with lots of shops and restaurant Bad: 1) Hotel is pretty run down inside (except the lobby) 2) Not really a traditional Japanese hotel even though it... more

Thank you for staying with us. We do our best to meet all of our guests’ needs with visitors’ opinion. We repair our facility bit by bit but we are very sorry for inconvenience you felt. We stayed at this nice Ryokan for 2 nights in early September, as we wanted to experience the Japanese style accommodation. The staff was very friendly, the hotel was quite nice and the room was very clean. The hotel itself was not exactly a palace, meaning that the web site definitely gives it a bit more posh feel than it... more
