Wanted a real ryokan experience (not just somewhere with Japanese decor) and chose Kikokuso after a lot of research. Felt comfortable there from the moment we checked in - it's homey and the family who run the place are very warm and hospitable. We left our luggage and returned just before dinner was to be ready. Our luggage had been... more

We stayed here in July for one night during our trip to Kyoto. We arrived in the pouring rain, the owner gave us a lovely welcome, we dropped off our bags as our room wasn't available until four o'clock. The owner gave us an extra umbrella and guide map where she pointed out the best temples and things to see... more

Location - 5-10 mins walk from Kyoto main station. Fantastic. Service - Bar far the best we received in Japan. This ryokan is run by a family: an elderly couple, their two children, and their daughter in-law. - They gave us a lift back to the station with our luggage in their own car not once, but twice. - We... more

We just returned from Kikokuso and could not have been happier! This Ryokan had a nice, relaxed feeling to it. The hosts made us feel like we were the only guests there, and did everything they could to make our stay wonderful. Comfortable, clean, within a 15 min walk of the JR station, right beside a beautiful walled garden (the... more

I stayed at Kikokuso with my five friends. We shared a typical Japanese room. This ryokan is run by fifth generation of same family and you can certainly feel it. The service was amazingly friendly, careful and traditional. Furnishings were as Japanese as I could imagine: small altars, paintings, paper walls, garden, jacuzzi etc. I had read good commentary about... more

We stayed here for 4 nights during a mammoth trip around Japan for our Honeymoon. I booked here from great reviews from trip advisor and I was not disappointed! We were treated like the owners' own children and were helped in every possible way that they could help us. We tried the Japanese style breakfast for the first morning which... more

We checked in only for 1 night - admittedly, budget constraint was one factor but the experience was definitely worth every yen! The owners are very gracious and we were very well taken care of. Breakfast and dinner were fantastic, you can tell it was prepared with passion. We recommend this place hands down. It feels like a place that's... more

Wow, what an experience! We splurged one night and stayed at the Kikukuso and were not disappointed. The inn keeper was absolutely lovely and ensured that we were looked after in a style we can only imagine occurred 'back in the day'. Our room overlooked an amazing garden complete with waterfall, pond and goldfish. We were greeted with green tea... more
