We found this hotel through Lonely Planet, and booked it a couple of days before leaving Rio de Janeiro to go to Manaus.

The rooms were simple but clean, with airconditioning, and no hot water (no problem since Manaus is always hot so the natural water feels nice). We did a two day trip into the jungle, and were able to leave our luggage in lockers at the hotel which was really nice. The was a safe to leave you valuables, but you don't receive a receipt. We left all of our cash and were sure we were going to be robbed, but nothing disappeared, and we had no problems.

The hotel is in the less interesting parts of town, so there weren't any restaurants close by, but Manaus is a small city and walking to the Opera House (in the area with the nice hotels and restaurants) took only 15 minutes, and cost 10 reais by taxi.

There were mosquitos, so it'd might be a good idea to get a room on the second or third floor to try and avoid them.
