If visiting Brasil, Ouro Preto and Mariana are a must. Ouro Preto is an historic intact cobble stoned town with its own delicious cuisine. We stayed in the Pousada do Arcanjo on the mountain rim looking across the town about 1 km up from the town centre. Good to be away from the tourist bussle. The hotel comprised 16 or so rooms. Ours on the upper level, (there are two) was comfortable, a bit rustic, spacious with practical ensuite. Breakfast was excellent, staff very attentive (reasonable amount of English). They run an on-call shuttle service to town centre and restaurants. Roads very steep, do not wear high heels according to my partner. Rating would be 3.5 although hotel claims 4 stars. Only issue was there was no central heating and mid winter inland can be cold. Getting there and hotel arrangements were arranged by a great guide Pedro Paulo (tourguidebrasil - web site) who arranged car transportation between Belo Horizonte airport and pousada (about 2 hrs).
