This pleasant hostal has an attractive garden with tables and chairs outside each room - the rooms are all on the ground floor in a little square next to the garden. The owner is friendly and helpful, which always feels like a bonus in Ecuador. I liked the stained glass doors and windows and the rooms are fairly cosy, but nothing out of the ordinary. It is, however, excellent value. I paid $10 for a room with cable TV and a double bed (no breakfast, however). I've been in much uglier, noisy dives where I've paid three or four times as much. It's a bit of a walk from the train station (10-15 minutes), so if you're doing the Devil's Nose and you don't fancy a walk at six in the morning, then you're probably better off staying in Tren Dorado. It is, however, quieter than most places in the centre and if you're in Riobamba for a few days, or a few weeks, to go hiking or mountaineering, then it's a pretty good choice.
