I booked Gerd & Noi as the bungalows are right on the beach, and this was the best thing about the resort, coupled with a nice pool for afternoon swims. If you want to be right on the beach at cheap cost, stay here. The bunglaows themselves are basic, with terrible pink decor. But they were clean and spacious, with warm (not hot) showers, fridge etc. They had everything you needed. The restaurant serves really decent food and incredible pineapple yoghurt shakes. The resort is mostly occupied by families, many of them German, so we found ourselves wandering up to the main drag for drinks during the evening. Make sure you walk north along the beach one afternoon, as there are lots of cute shacks selling food and cocktails. Khao Lak itself has a bit of a package-tour vibe and I have been to far more beautiful places in Thailand, so not sure we would return. more
