We stayed at the Nak Hotel for one night on our way back from a river trip. The location is great - right in the middle of the city near the harbour and main bus station. Our room was huge with a large comfortable bed, lounges and separate bathroom and great air conditioning. It had real character and style -... more

Stayed here 2 nights. The hotel feels quite old . Hallways are dark and dismal and have a strange smell(?mildew). The room we had was basic but clean, and had 3 large, angled windows that provided a great view over the port. One wall was painted red which went with the overall red/Chinese theme of the hotel. Bamboo shades partially covered... more

The positives: Staff were friendly, the AC eventually cooled the room, and the rooftop bar was pretty good, and seems to be a hangout place for the young people in Sandakan. We had a couple of good drinks and the seafood bisque was surprisingly good. We stayed for less than 12 hours - in late one evening, out early the... more

Nak hotel was a real refreshing treat after touring most of Sandakan. It stands out from the neighboring buildings with its reds and its grandiose decor, remarkably so without looking pretentious. Service staff were always waiting on us and willing to go out of their way. Its rooftop bar was the most delightful part of our stay i must say.... more

I personally liked the place for it's quirky character, but there were too many setbacks for me to stay again. On the first night the lobby was completely flooded and there was nowhere I could go for food. On the morning of the second day water to the shower stopped. The people were nice but my wife hated the place... more

Management response from

The reclamation of the shoreline to create the new harbourfront (and hotels - while demolishing a few cultural relics like our old market) was not engineered well, leading to poor drainage systems affecting buildings behind the new structures. When it rains heavily, many shops and buildings in the old streets face a common 'flooding' problem. And this has only occurred...

I echo the comments made by eriktera. The rooms are shabby, especially the windows and the bathrooms. Although it is relatively cheap, it was still incredibly dated hotel. Breakfast was okay, and as others have commented, the roof bar (where breakfast is served) has a fantastic view over the ocean. I would perhaps recommend a 1 - 2 night stay... more

We flew to Sandakan as the first stop on our jungle river tour. We stayed one night in the city. I chose the NAK hotel from reading the reviews here. I was unimpressed with the place. The rooms were somewhat shabby and dingy. The architecture was very strange, with weird alcoves at each window. (from my kid's perspective, these were... more

We found out about the hotel while in the area and were delighted with our stay there. The bedrooms have been decorated and although the bathrooms are still to be done they were clean and servicable. Breakfast was at a diner next door. Very central, across the road from the local bus station and only 10 minutes to the long... more

I enjoyed my stay at Nak Hotel. I went on a weekend, and awoke to a food bazaar right across the street. The rooms were spacious and had a retro feel to it. I liked the sea view they offered. The toilets were a little older compared to the renovated rooms, but it was functional and served it's purpose. Service... more

The Nak is a great little gem of a hotel. I had a great stay here with my boyfriend and friends. The Nak is a great base not only because of its location, but the staff are friendly, knowledgeable and accomodating. At the Nak you are a stone's throw away from the best of what Sandakan has to offer e.g.... more
