We arrived to find that the non smoking family room we had booked (and confirmed) had been given to someone else. We were offered a smoking room instead. After some negotiations we managed to get two non smoking rooms at the same price. The rooms were small with noisy air conditioning units. Within 10 minutes one of the toilets blocked... more

The Hotel Sandakan is a centrally located, functional stop over. Our room overlooked the city and the Mosque. The room was fine and we got a good night's sleep. There is a cafe and a Chinese restaurant within the hotel. They are convenient, but I would next time plan to eat at the hilltop tea shop and restaurant just across... more

We stayed at Hotel Sandakan for two nights, and found it to be good value for money. The room was larger and in better condition than the five-star hotel in Kuala Lumpur, although hotel facilities were much smaller but quite satisfactory for the price. Nice room overlooking the town and bay, in good position near to police headquarters. Would stay... more

Neither hotel nor town warrant more than a stopover. However if you have to stay in this town this hotel seems like a reasonable option. (We flew into Sandakan and then were picked up for a few days at the Kinabatangan followed by Danum Valley and Sipadan – amazing experience) Have to say our room was large, clean and modern.... more

I was there one night before my Kinanbatangan tour. Located in the city centre, is good to see the few things Sandakan have to offer, to choice between some restaurant, meet people, have a walk. Staff is very helpful, and do whatever they can to help you, even more then what they have to; a plus value. Room is ok... more

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a tour around Borneo. The hotle was well positioned to explore Sandakan. There are quite a few places of interest, including the Sandakan Memorial. The taxi ride here cost up 50Ringitt, and that included the driver returning at a prearranged time to collect us. The town itself is not a 'tourist'... more

I booked 2 nights at this hotel and then read the dreadful reviews. As a result I cancelled our second night and booked somewhere else (we couldn't really change our first night due to complicated travel plans). I was expecting a very poor hotel experience. We got the opposite. A grand lobby with very polite & attentive staff checked us... more

We flew to Sandakan and arrived in the atfernoon, the plan being to go into the jungle the next morning. Sandakan itself is grimy, intimidating (especially for a young teenage daughter), smelly and uneventful. We retreated to the hotel for some food. Boring menu with little actually available. Seems like we should have gone to Sabah. Not much to see... more

Staff were generally friendly.. with one of the front counter staff a stand-out when it came to assistance and politeness. He should've been working at a more up market hotel somewhere. The rooms are basic, despite having undergone a make over. Our room still had plastic over the bed-side lights. Some of the tiles in the shower were looking a... more
