Heliconia island was the first stop in our 2 weeks CR tour. We chose the spot because we did not want to drive for long on the first day (still weary after a intercontinental flight). Heliconia prooved to be a good choiche. It's great for discovering the flora and fauna and to get into the right holliday groove. It is... More

Well worth a visit, though perhaps one night rather than two would have been more appropriate. With a car easy to get to, without difficult to leave. I waited 1hr 30mins for a bus at the end of the path on the main road for a bus, which should have turend up after 10 minutes. It was pouring down with... More

The property was a botanical garden and the grounds are beautiful. The unit that we were in was very nice with both hotwater and a functional air conditioner. It borders the Sarapique River and during the green season can occassionally flood. All units are raised about 5 feet above the ground. Birds abound on the property and the owners have... More

We did not stay here, as other reviewers have mentioned, so we cannot speak to the rooms/stay. The "island" is really a small plot of land surrounded by two rivers. The flowers and plants are beautiful, and we did spot a snake. We also heard monkeys, but we only managed to get one photo of them. Nice to walk around... More

We visited for a tour, not to stay, after, a strong recommendation in our guide book. It was rather disappointing. Carolien was away so no tours were available. We were invited to look around by ourselves, but there really was nothing to explain what we were looking at, so was rather a waste of time. To charge $12 each was... More

We did not actually stay at the bed and breakfast/hotel but visited the gardens and went on a tour of the island with the owner. A prodigious display of Heliconia well displayed and excellently described by Carolien. An added bonus was the excellent variety of fauna that we were able to see on out tour. A very worthwhile place to... More

Disappointed, that's the word that first comes to mind - now somewhat more than a month after our stay at Heliconia Island. Difficult, difficult as good second one. Difficult to write a negative review, with Carolien working so hard to keep this place running! But OK, a review is just an opinion - below depicts mine, ours .... n=1 As... More

My family and I just visited the wonderful gardens at Heliconia Island. Beautiful and colorful species & interesting trails together in a magnificent piece of land. Henk and Caroline were super welcoming & friendly. The guided tour with Caroline was great. She will not hesitate to answer your questions with a big smile. Don't miss this little gem in the... More

We stayed here during our round trip to Costa Rica. We really enjoyed our stay. Carolien seemed to know everything about nature and showed us owls, toucans and even a sloth, living in their garden. They have I think the largest collection heliconia's in Costa Rica. The houses are nice, modern but cosy. True: you don't have a small house... More

Heleconia Island was our last stop before heading back home. And it was just the best place to finish a great holiday. The owners have the most amazing garden with loads of different Heliconias but also with numorous bird species, a large group of Howler monkeys and all sorts of other animals. We walked the garden together with Carolien (owner)... More
