A word of advise - do not stay there. The manager is not a friendly person. He was very rude to us, and based on his appalling behavior we decided not to stay there. more

We found Kaya's online and it seemed like a perfect place to stay - right on the beach and so artsy. We knew that it wouldn't be like staying in a 5 star hotel - how could it be with those prices???? We fell in love with the view and with the staff. The owner goes out of his way... more

We stayed here in early July 2009 as part 1 of our Costa Rica Tour. We loved it!! We felt that it was clean enough for us, and we appreciated all the extra touches that the housekeeper, Teresa, put in for us. For example, my daughter and I were both sick on one of the days. Teresa came in, and... more

JT and his staff are wonderful people. Very laid back and very pleasant. The rooms are tiny and not always well kept. It seems to be so laid back that it feels to me more like a hostel than a hotel, and there is nothing wrong with that except that Kayas daily room rate is much more than hostels in... more

The rooms and common areas were comfortable and beautifull having been constructed from and/or decorated with driftwood. Location was great because it was a very short walk to town but far enough away that you felt a calming sense of privacy. Also, you were only about 25 meters from Playa Negra. J.T. and the rest of the staff were all... more

My stay at Kaya's Place was a let down. Overall I found the hotel to be unkempt; there was no hot water, the exterior light outside my room was burned out (which made it very difficult to navigate at night and in the rain) and the electricity/phone/Internet were all sporadic. The bar was not well stocked and the kitchen was... more

Kaya's Place was a complete diamond in the rough! I absolutely loved it! The staff were more than pleasant and helpful; they provided a great atmosphere in addition to the beautiful craftsmanship of the hotel itself. I would recommend that any and everyone go to Puerto Viejo and stay at Kaya's Place; it is an experience that lasts a lifetime.... more

I recently stayed at Kaya's Place in Puerto Viejo for the first two weeks of January 2009. I heard of the hotel by word of mouth from several friends and was pleased to love it as much as they had. The hotel itself is beautiful, with a very open aired, caribbean, organic, artsy feel to it. The main floor lobby/bar... more

Kaya's is a jungle lodge in seach of a sitcom. Margaritaville would be a good name. The fubsy owner runs the place like a beach house for buds, except everyone pays. Much more than they should. His snide replies to even the most basic questions (Q. Would you like my name so that you can attach it to my laundry?... more

Dear SS, You hit the nail on the head, and we are quite honored by your accuracy. The name of our running sitcom is Margaritaville! It has also been called the Pirate's Ship, but we all have been sticking with the former. It really is amazing that we can find such a diverse cross section of tourism walking through our...

I got bed bugs at Kaya's Place. When I showed the hotel my bites, they said it was mosquitoes. It was *not* mosquitoes, it was definitely bed bugs, as other travellers who have seen bed bug bites could attest too. This place has a cool atmosphere, but it's dirty and crawling with bugs. more

Management response from
Kayasplace, Manager

At Kaya's Place we take measures to control the bugs on property as we should living in this jungle environment. Our organic pesticides work well and we do appologize if you feel you received bites while you were a guest with us. This is the first such complaint we have received regarding bed bugs and are going to take your...
