The Hemenway Hotel in San Jose, Costa Rica was the absolute best choice for me. The room was very modest, but extremely clean and met my needs. The staff was outstanding in offering suggestions for excursions and there is a very good restaurant right next door called Las Palmas. The hotel is a five minute walk to downtown. The continental... more

I went to Costa Rica for a short business trip and was recommended by some friends to stay at the Hemingway. I stayed in a large standard room that faced the patio area. It was good, I slept well, ate very well the next morning. it's like a self-serve breakfast with quite a few things to choose from. Try the... more

This was my first time at the Hemingway, I just walked in because I liked the name while checking out Barrio Amon, a beautiful old town in downtown San Jose. The Hemingway has very friendly and helpful staff, and it is very well located. Breakfast patio area is great to relax in and the painter's murals are very unique and... more

I wrote a rather glowing review following my first stay at the Hemingway. I recently visited the facility during my last trip to Costa Rica and MY! has it changed: The place has a new manager and a new feel. While attempting to "act" like an "upscale eco-tourist/green hotel", it falls flat on it's face for so doing. The staff... more

We only stayed our first and our last nights in Costa Rica in San Jose. So the Hemmingway was perfect for us. Not too far from the airport (@ USD$20 taxi ride), near to good restaurants (Cafe Mundo) and has a place with a bar/beer next door (the Peruvian place). The hosts were very nice. There is internet upstairs. It... more

All I can say is that I have never in my life counted the hours to get out of a hotel before. It was absolutely terrible - every aspect. Dirty, disorganised and sleazy. more

My husband, son and I stayed here the last night of a week long trip to Costa Rica specifically Manuel Antonio. This was the worst. Threadbare linens, dirty room, only one wash cloth, no ice, nothing and we were in a deluxe. I shutter to think what the standard looks like. There is no air conditioning so you have to... more

Stayed there 23rd and 29th of Feb. Very friendly & helpful staff. Rooms simple yet clean and comfortable. Breakfast in the small courtyard was very good - try the tamals! Previous comments were about the noise - whats with that? you are in the heart of the city! Besides, it adds character. If you want to cookie-cutter then stay at... more

I thought this place was horrible. We came back from Manuel Antonio from an amazing vacation to San Joses Homless Shelter known as the Hemmingway Inn. Convinced to go there by the owners while visiting scottsdale, AZ, I thought this would be great. However, our room was dirty, we heard every sound a city can produce throughout the night, and... more

Just back from Costa Rica and used the internet to find hotels etc. The Hemingway Inn has an amazing website and sounds like just the place to stay in San Jose. It isnt... it is a dive, cant imagine how they can charge so much for the place. Met others on my travels who had stayed there and felt the... more
