Brilliant hotel. The rooms are comfortable, the decor is quirky and unique, and the whole atmosphere is completely relaxing whilst being in the middle of San Jose. The owner, Mayra Guell, is incredibly welcoming and helpful with lots of ideas and suggestions for places to visit. The rooms are very affordable, i have paid a lot more for less. more

The proprieter, Mayra Guell deserves kudos for creating a front yard attractive to birds and other creatures. That said, although I wanted to like this B&B, I cannot recommend it for a number of reasons: Perhaps most important, the place would likely be far from safe in a fire. The rooms' windows have bars, and leaving through the one building... more

We only stayed one night at Cinco Hormigas Rojas. The place is very unique, colorful and decorated by great art from Mayra, the artist/owner. The garden area is very cool, a wonderful oasis in the city. Mayra was very nice and helpful, far from the elitist description given in another review. The hotel is in a nice area of town... more

Okay, I love nature but this was down right CREEPY... How about having some live plants and not all the dead ones? The place was way too dark and spooky looking. The rooms felt muggy and the bathroom was pretty nasty. I basically thought it was a major dump; dirty, tacky, and downright horrific. The breakfast was a joke...what type... more

If you want to wake up to birds in the midst of a very noisy city, be surrounded by colorful art, plants and animals, have personalized attention, and be within walking distance of almost everything you could want to see and do including eating, then we recommend this for you. Mayra is fascinating. Breakfast isn't a reason to stay here,... more

My 10 year old son and I had a wonderful stay at this quaint and quirky bed and breakfast when spent the night in San Jose on our way to surf in Nosara. My son and I are both nature lovers and Mayra's magical oasis in the city was the perfect place for us. Mayra arranged for us to be... more

I was really excited about my stay at this hotel after reading reviews about this place. It is in a nice location - walking distance to the main section with shops, National Theater, etc. The plants and flowers and birds and bats in the evening were really lovely as well. The room left a bit to be desired though. The... more

Mayra is a true Costa Rican gem, as is her bed and breakfast. This was the perfect oasis for my friend and I to stay at as we crisscrossed the country using San Jose as our base. I LOVED the funky artwork and being literaly surrounded by nature. In addition to a great place to stay, Mayra has wonderful suggestions... more

Cinco Hormigas Rojas is a most unusual hotel in a lovely and safe section of San Jose. The proprietor, Mayra Guell, is marvelously attentive. The experience is well worth the price. more
