Lonely Planet says that Haines, Alaska is great and fabulous with lots of culture etc. Not so much! And the restaurants are terrible and expensive--I paid like 15 bucks for fish and chips at lunchtime with no drink! But the Chilkat Eagle is nicely located within walking distance of the port area. Book boat tours in advance and expect to pay ridiculous amounts of money. I suggest going to Whittier and getting a boat there--it is a far more interesting place than Haines and the accommodations are more comfortable than Chilkat Eagle. The B&B was quaint in the way a old rag doll is quaint. But the main part of the house was clutter-iffic. Somebody needs to hire a maid to straighten up. It was clean enough I guess and lord knows my place has looked worse when I was single and living alone in a studio apartment, but when one is operating a bed and breakfast, one should perhaps tidy up, get some new furniture, some new carpeting, slap a coat of paint on, and renovate the ancient... more
