Filthy, dark, cold and overpriced sums up the Homer Hostel.
Pros: Friendly staff, internet works reliably, location is safe and quiet. Cons: Absolutely FILTHY, particularly the bathrooms. The mattresses, bedding and pillows are old and dingy. This place is way overpriced for what it is, but I guess that's what you get in Alaska in the summertime.
Wonderful location. Friendly staff. But filthy. Not dirty. Filthy. No cleaning staff. Hostelers are supposed to clean the place. Computer for guests is a plus. Inadequate toilet/bathing facilities for the number of rooms/beds. More than run down. It's never been run up. And COLD at night. No heat turned on in the house.
Homer Hostel is in a nice area of town, with great views of the bay. It is fithy though, scary to walk bare foot anywhere. There was a "housekeeper" who was around to clean and make beds He lives in a tent outside the back door.
