Betsy and Davis Webb have run the Magic Canyon Ranch B&B a few minutes outside Homer, Alaska, for 17 years. They say this will be their last year, so we'll see.

We stayed for three nights; they cut us a deal on two rooms -- one for my wife and me, one for our two kids (16 and 18) -- and both were ideal. Our room had a double bed; the kids' room had three singles. These two rooms shared a bath. There was a third guest room with what looked to be a queen bed; that room had its own private bath.

Davis runs the B&B. He's a great fellow, with wonderful stories and good advice on where to eat or activities to undertake. And, he'll make phone calls for you to set up reservations or things for you. He'll either leave you a note on the front door to let you know his success, or he'll tell you if he's there. We enjoyed many conversations with him, whether over breakfast, or after a day's outing, or on the front porch with him and Betsy.
