I stayed in this hostel for 4 nights and I was very positively surprised by the cleanliness of the hostel. Some members of the staff are really friendly, others less... The building is very conveniently located in the city (10 minutes walk from the bus station and any other excursion departure). It has a super big and well-equipped kitchen. Bathroom... More

Cleanest, best run hostel I've ever been to. Better than any of the ones I've used in Europe. Large living room, large fully stocked kitchen. More adult patrons. Short walk down the hill to town. Beds are not five star, but for a hostel, they were fine. Would definitely stay there again.

Maybe it is the loneliness of Juneau, Alaska or the hassle of dealing with strangers but the folks who run this place are truly nasty. Nice greeting? Kind words? Something nice? No way! And don't try to get into the place between 9am and 5pm no matter what, no way, don't even try, absolutely not, go away, don't bother us... More

I stayed at the Juneau Hostel for one night this summer and was sorely disappointed. For $12 I wouldn't expect great customer service- but the couple at this hostel were unnecessarily condescending. Expect to be scolded even if you arrive before the 11:00 PM curfew and to be awaken military-style, even if it's not quite 9:00 AM. I've stayed at... More

$12/night? Heck yes. Beds aren't great though & you have a 5 minute chore to do before check out. The cab ride can be expensive from the airport but still less than staying in a hotel. Whenever I have my car in Juneau- I'm staying at the hostel!

We were excited to arrive at the hostel as we had read great things about it. But when we arrived, the woman at the front desk was miserable with us. She thought we only had 2 in our party when I had definitely told her 5 people and she had confirmed this in an email. She argued with me about... More

The only 2 negatives about this hostel. 1. Is the steep hike uphill you have to make to reach the hostel. 2. access hours of the hostel are limited. The access hours, though limited, kind of force you to find something to do for the day and explore. So it is kind of a good thing, and bad, depending on... More

Stayed 3 nights Fo 12$ per night they really offer a clean, safe and friendly environment. It's not perfection but it's really worth to try. Would advise it to a friend

Location is a bit uphill but still everything within walking distance. Be sure to make reservations ahead and be aware that there are small chores to do (but you can select tham yourself from a list, should not be more work than 10 min). Best value for the rooms (10$). Kitchen is very well equipped. also be aware that there... More

when traveling on the cheap, this hostel is worth a visit. everyone chips in on the chores to help keep it clean (& cheap). dorm room accommodations, yet everyone contributes to make it feel like home; comfortable living room; complete kitchen; all sorts of visitors; and close to downtown.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Juneau Hostel is a non-profit, volunteer-run, public service to provide affordable accommodation for travelers and the families from the outlying communities of Southeast Alaska. Because we are volunteer-run, we have day jobs, which is why we have the 9-5 lock-out, and which is why we are particular about everybody leaving at 9. We have to go to work. The 11 pm curfew ensures quiet, safe, family-oriented accommodation. The gender segregated dorm rooms have no more than 8 beds in the largest room. Yes, the beds are uncomfortable, but you won’t find cleaner or safer accommodations anywhere in the world. In addition, we provide linens, towels, wifi, unlimited hot water, a kitchen and comfortable common area and coin-operated laundry facilities. We are open 350 days a year and the managers live onsite with children. ... more   less
