Maybe the coolest "hotel" experience I've ever had. Didn't know quite what to expect as a friend arranged our trip. We arrived at the Mountain Retreat to the most beautiful view of the Sapa valley - extraordinary. Our sleeping accomodations were thatched, one room huts on stilts, with a basic bed (and mosquito netting) overlooking the valley. Going to sleep... More

I get the less than stellar reviews in that the Hmong Mountain Retreat is a bit out of town, is not your typical hotel and does not have the amenities one normally associates with a hotel. That said, this place is one of the most special inns I've ever experienced. It is truly placed in a slice of heaven, the... More

We arrived at Hmong Mountain retreat at 3pm to utter confusion. Although we had a confirmed booking, they did not seem to be expecting us and our room was not yet ready. Normally this would not have been too much of a problem but no one seemed to know what was going on, and no one showed us any kind... More

Fantastic location and amazing scenery BUT service is only available for a couple of hours a day. Shuttlebus does not shuttle. Check out is at 10 a.m. but 1st bus doesn't leave until 11a.m. so an hour of sitting waiting for no reason. Only other bus is at 2 p.m.( apparently) which is useless if you are doing an organised... The view alone is worth it. Sure it's rustic - but you're in Sapa! The beds are comfy, the huts peacefu, quiet and private, and the brekky is yum. Yes it's expensive (relative to a dorm in town), and probably not for the road weary backpacker, but if you're on a short break and can afford it, then go for... More

We just got back from a one night stay in one of the bungalows. The bungalows are very basic but we found them to be clean. Ours contained one very large double bed (two big singles joined together - notable and uncomfortable join in the middle), an electric heater (cut out after about 30 minutes and didn't heat the unsealed... This is not a place for Gucci handbag toting types with a penchant for hand pressed towels and little bottles of Yakult. It's way up in the hills and the bungalows are basic. But that's the whole idea, it's a place you go to escape, relax and enjoy views you thought only existed on the pages of National Geographic. My... More

Disappointing since day one. Booking email gave incorrect details - dinner wasnt included as stated. Overcharging for transfers (even their own blog says so!). Had to wait for 1 1/2 hours at station upon arrival to depart to sapa. Arrived at retreat. A handful of bungalows in a beautiful setting, yet at nearly 70$ inc all charges are grossly overpriced.... The place is nice and the views are great. It is 6 km away from Sapa town, and transport is usually not available, so you should plan everything before getting there if you don't want to waste time. The bungalow was basic but nice, it was clean although quite small (considering that we had big backpacks) and there were no... More

Set 6 km from Sapa center are these simple mountain lodges. The views are stunning and seem to keep setting with the setting of the sun! The rooms are simple and the bed slightly to the hard side. The bathroom facilities are shared but otherwise fine (but bring your own mirror if you need one ;)). The staff is from... More
